I’m spoiled on going to the theater. I now only like to go if they have the giant lazy boy type seats that lean back where I can order food and drinks. Otherwise, I will wait until it is streaming.

For me? Absolutely.
I love going to the movies.

Now that I’m in my 40’s with a family, my favorite is going by myself. Doesn’t matter the day or time.

for me yes - but then again, there is things like yesterday that makes me hate them.

sitting in a theater with about 75 seats, of which there are about 68 of them available, and a woman has to get the seat next to mine - and then get on her phone multiple times during it.

I think for big action movies for sure

I think it is under appreciated that seeing something like a comedy with a large crowd who is also laughing enhances the experience.

It enhances my experience when there are other respectable people in the theater with me. My biggest pet peeve while at the theater is the people next to me talking...

Not with the phone and talking at the screen, I will wait and watch it at home. A good surround sound system and nice TV, also my own snacks and beverages.

A movie theater can make it better, but it has to be a good, top-tier theater, and the movie and theater need to be "tuned together", whatever and however that's done.

Case in point- I once would have said superhero blockbusters should be seen in the theater, to better get the sensory experience.

I went and saw Shazam opening night at an AMC, on their "big" screen. I think it's called the Dolby cinema screen. Over off O'Neal.
I also saw Dr Strange, Multiverse of Madness on a "premium" screen, I forget which one.

Both times, I came away unimpressed and disappointed with the sensory experience... the colors were off on Shazam. The sound was hollow on MoM. I get that these weren't great movies, but they should have had some visual/audio pop to them. I've since watched them at home in my home theater setup, both were better experiences then.

Top Gun Maverick and Dune were both fantastic in the theater, and again both fantastic at home. Those, I guess you could say, were "better" at the theater, but not to an extreme extent.

So, I do have a nice Yamaha AV receiver with 7x2 Dolby Atmos set up, and more importantly, I took the time to lay out and tune the speakers and subwoofer correctly to my room; it's not "just" using a soundbar. And my speakers are older, but I like having the wired sound (and the wires are now tucked so that they aren't in the way). I don't have the best TV, but the picture is ok and 4k, and the speakers are irrelevant since I use the surround instead.

Most certainly. Sadly, there is always an inconsiderate soul playing a game on their phone or answering calls.

alajones2 and I watched Devil Wears Prada 2 on Sunday and I was very happy that we saw it in theaters. My FB Reels algorithm is full of "what is wrong with movies today" videos (Director's choosing green screens over sets, digital lighting is shitty, etc.). This movie was just really well done. The locations, the sets, the shots of NYC and Milan, etc. Just a great job.

I was the biggest advocate for theaters, was a MoviePass and AMC+ power user, but the state of theaters today has me staying home. Understaffed theaters, broken chairs left available for you to reserve, terrible sound systems. The last two films that I saw in AMC Dolby sounded terrible. It sounds like AMC 16's Dolby theater has a loud HVAC problem.

The assholes in the theater I can understand. That's a given possibility going in. But the stuff that the theater can handle, that's keeping me away.

I just need it LOUD.

I was an Alamo Drafthouse devotee for almost the last 20 years, precisely because the bad behavior was blatantly addressed in an aggressive manner, not the limp wristed stuff the big chains do (I've used a non Alamo theater fewer than 10 times in the last decade.)

Except for having to bring the kids, it was my tactic to always go to a showing Friday afternoon before school got out, and it mostly worked. But, since our Alamo switched to Flix Brewhouse (with FOUR beers on tap,) there is zero reason to go to a theater.

Also, Alamo used to have you write your order on a slip of paper with a pencil at each seat. Now, you have to pull out your phone and scan a QR code to order. Bye, Felicia.

To each their own, but that scenario is the exact opposite of awesome for me.

All the mention of an empty theater is true.

But… Wife drug me to A Star is Born. Packed theater. After 30 mins everyone is into it. Heavily tilted toward a female audience. When the movie ended after the final song and screen went to black, it was dead silence. Except for audible sniffles. It lasted 10-15 seconds before the crowd started mumbling and packing up.

Maybe not the best movie example for this group. But that is what the theater experience CAN be. A lot of things need to line up to not have noise, and kids, and assholes.
