Maybe I’m just getting tired of movies like this.

Was a pretty big letdown and I expected more from the multiverse and what the MCU is building towards now instead of just Wanda vs Strange. America Chavez was terrible and straight from the CW. The only redeeming part of the movie was Wanda annihilating the Illuminati and Zombie Strange.
I gave it a 7/10. I have to give a lot of credit to Marvel for breaking a lot of their normal formula in this one. It feels very different. For some, it's jarring, but for me, it was refreshing. I thought America was pretty lackluster as a character, just a walking McGuffin/deus ex machina that could do whatever the plot required of her.
Wanda was awesome. I was a big fan of Wanda/Vision, but my biggest criticism with it was how the ending made her seem much more like a villain than a hero. I didn't understand why they were treating her as such. Seeing her abrupt heel turn early on was very satisfying. In addition, knowing the woke rules for movies (that women can never be defeated in a physical fight by a man or successfully talked down to by a man), I was actually incredibly curious to see how she would be defeated. I felt emotionally invested in the journey even though my brain could register that it was all quite silly.
Her acting is continuously impressive, and the character development is spectacular. In addition, Olson commands every scene she's in while displaying a large range of emotion. The action sequences are mostly really well-done as well, with Raimy's signature mix of CGI hero action and practical effects horror. Wanda is legitimately terrifying at times, like an unstoppable multi-versal momma-bear terminator, and it's incredibly fun.
This movie has some serious pacing issues. The beginning with Wanda's heel turn to taking out the sorcerers feels extremely rushed, but the movie drags significantly towards the latter middle.
I also don't find Dr. Strange to be that compelling or consistent of a character, nor do I feel like he has much of an arc (America has almost no arc because she's not a character to begin with, just a talking McGuffin). He seems to constantly pendulum from being all-knowing and uber competent to being completely selfish, flippant, impulsive, and downright idiotic at times. In addition, he, and his love interest, have zero on-screen chemistry. I get that this film is about him accepting that there cannot be a relationship there, but the fact that there's so little chemistry makes us wonder why he ever thought there could be one to begin with.
It's a flawed movie, but a worthwhile one, imo. Marvel has so many movies that are consistently, at least, good, so this one won't stand out from the pack on quality alone, but it's unique feel makes it a breath of fresh air to anyone who has grown tired of the now worn out formula.

maybe its my 'fault' for not watching any of the Wandavision stuff
100% your fault because Wanda/Vision provides 80% of the setup to this movie. We see Wanda lose her brother in Civil War, then lose her husband in Infinity War. We see Wanda deal with that grief in Wanda/Vision which serves as her bridge to becoming the villain in Multiverse of Madness.
If you didn't see Wanda/Vision, then you missed a huge portion of her character arc, the one where she basically uses her magic to "resurrect" her family and live a sitcom-style life with the people she loves. However, none of it is real and she eventually gives up her "family" to free the people of Westview from this crazy spell that's slowly killing them while imprisoning them as essentially "cast members" in this "sitcom life" of hers.
It's a pretty ridiculous concept, but it sorta makes sense in the show and sets her up for why she's trying to traverse the multiverse. She's looking for a place to escape to where her family exists because she does not understand how to live happily without them.
quote:
"Why the heck do I care about these people"
Because Wanda/Vision
quote:
"Why is this supposed all powerful magic witch having so much trouble with Dr. Strange and this new chick who can't control her powers at all"
Because Dr. Strange is also extremely powerful. Seriously, did you watch Dr. Strange, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Endgame, or Spiderman: Multiverse of Madness? Dr. Strange is OP AF, requiring a real OP AF villain to push him.
quote:
At the end of the movie (similar to the recent spiderman) I was left feeling, so... nothing has changed, why did I even bother?
Because you missed the setup in Wanda/Vision for why Wanda was the way she was, you lacked any ability to appreciate the emotional payoff at the end of the movie when she finally finishes her arc. You're like someone who's never seen Star Wars watching Return of the Jedi for the first time wondering why Luke gives a crap about his asthmatic father!

The pin? Nah not really. The pin in every shot, with “amor es amor” on her jacket and her searching for her 2 Moms as her driving force…yeah that’s a bit much for an MCU movie. People seem to be forgetting the kids that wanted to see this due to Strange being a big part of Spiderman. Then you have Disney reps flat out saying they want more and more gay stories.
Keep thinking it’s just a pin though. No agenda…

ETA: They literally sell the pin on her jacket for merch.
They made it more tame for the merch. She wears the one with the trans grossness on it in the movie.
ETA: the movie was decent, but I don't really feel a need to watch it again at the moment.

I saw it twice in the theaters, my kid decided he wanted to see it so I went with him for my second watch. I NEVER noticed that pin and really don't care it is there.

Just watched it..
Wasn't bad. Wanda was badass. When she snaps professor X's neck I was like.. damn.
Has anyone broken down the music note fight scene? Was it two separate songs from fantasia they were fighting with?
Couldn't put my finger on the tunes.

The character is gay. Is the pin on her jacket supposed to be shocking?

You sure you were watching? I had no idea it was going to be there and it was clear they were making every effort to highlight it. Was impossible to miss.
I was sure I was seeing things because I hadn't heard about it beforehand.

Shocking? No. Nonsensical? Yes. Absolutely disgusting and gross? Yes.

The movie was a mess
We are taken through all the madness to only come back to the original conclusion: Once Wanda realizes she has to kill herself to get what she wants, and will be hated by her own kids for doing it, it nullifies the need for all the other drama

It was sold as a let's get weird and crazy for two hours and see what happens at the end but the "madness" was pretty much a tight story structure and at the end you just kinda wonder what really changed.
Just finished it and this about sums it up

I feel like the trailers had 95% of the “madness” in them.
Then we have a Latina named “America” who is searching for her two lesbian moms.
I feel ripped off. I got high as frick expecting 2 hours of crazy shite and got the young and the restless marvel edition.

I honestly never noticed that a single time in the movie.
