Do you think we will ever see another Writers Guild strike now that AI is an option?

One wonders if they have lost a bunch of leverage now that Grok can provide full season outlines of shows with dialogue included.

Yes… because there needs to be some accountability. Who will the executive yell at and blame when no one likes their AI slop

Wasn't AI a part of the last strike?

You think more than about 5% of any writing out of Hollywood in the last 20 years has been "good"?

I mean I have no idea exactly what percentage you’re guesstimating in your head and what is counting within it, but yes there has been some great writing in the last 20 years. Theres been plenty of bad as well, kind of comes with the territory. The worst of the worst is still better than a chat bot whose simply plagiarizing and tossing together dogshit from the same writing you say is awful

Striking would be cutting off their nose to spite their face, but since the Unions are run by Democratic Party shills, this might happen. After one of the acting strikes, we got the rise of reality TV.

If they can get AI to write it they won't need human writers. The acting and directing unions will have to cave or we could see them lose their jobs too as more people begin to accept AI productions.

It happened in Verticals where several production companies (mostly Chinese owned) have stopped human productions and going solely AI.

It might take a decade, but AI productions may make it into the mainstream. If any are financially successful...watch out!

AI can just arrange words to sound good. They cannot "inhabit" a character like a human writer can. The difference is obvious.
Writers are safe, for now.
An AI can structure a script, describe a world, but can't do humans.

Except be convincing enough that incels in their basement commit suicide or fall in love with the fake human that AI created.

It wouldn't surprise me a bit if AI, guided by a single creator, couldn't produce something at least on the level of Rings of Power, if not now in a pretty short time. It also wouldn't surprise me if there's some creative wall it could hit, but so far the people I know who use it (I don't, I'm retired) generally warn against underestimating it, especially for tasks that just involve 1s and 0s.

I mean convincing people with clear or showing likely indicators of mental illness is a much different thing than making a movie meant to connect with a sizable audience and appeal to normal human feelings and emotion.

I'm far from an expert but I don't think everybody who's been duped by AI is abnormal.

And again, there would be a human creator tweaking and having AI improve the product. They could just do it much faster and without paying a room full of writers.

I will say, I'm workshopping some short stories that I plan to write and use AI to see if that premise has been done by someone before in any high profile way that I'm not aware of. Sometimes it'll give me unsolicited feedback on the idea and even suggestions about plot points and some of it is pretty good.

I don't think its a stretch at all to say AI will be not only used for writing soon, it'll actually be good at it.

It can already consume multiple time stamped files together so it can learn how to do things like CAD. You give it a CAD file, you give it a file showing keystrokes and clicks that were made during the process, you give it a txt file of which functions in the program were used, then you give it a video of the process itself and it can learn how to use CAD. Studios will use that same premise and feed movies and scripts into models they create for that purpose and it'll put out decent stuff. Bare minimum it will be used for initial drafts that actual writers go back and edit.

To the extent where you fall in love with a chat bot or allow it to convince yourself that you should kill yourself, yes absolutely something else is going on there already.

I think this is highly debatable whether this is or will ever actually be cheaper than the current model. Or if it ever is cheaper, if it can ever come close to passing the sniff test for a big audience. Right now this stuff is heavily subsidized and the real cost is something that is both hard to manage and hard to gauge. The models need constant training, especially for an output that is supposed to connect to a modern and very much online audience. The video generating models have been much more costly and a lot of them have already had the plug pulled on them. You still need these things to get a helluva lot better and more efficient for it to ever make sense for a major production replacing a ton of actual human capital, and while I’m sure most are convinced that these things are evolving at a rapid pace and will be super intelligence in no time, but it’s certainly slowed in recent times and it will develop even slower once the bubble bursts and there isn’t just billions of VC and circular finance cash floating around to pay for the training, dev ops, and subsidizing of the cost.

It's already used for tech writing, but you hit on the key IMO. No, I don't think "Computer, write me a script for a movie" will produce a blockbuster script any time soon, but "make this conversation shorter but include this reveal" is already a reality. It's a tool that can be used with great effectiveness by knowledgeable people.

And a good writer with a good AI tool needs a lot fewer writers to help them create and improve a script, that's just a fact. It will impact that industry, it's just a question of magnitude.

I would like to optimistically agree, but I see the robot Velveeta that is passed out as AI "art" and the general public's reaction tells me that the majority do not care.

Yes because if/when a refined AI can ever churn out a decent hit, it's going to create a stampede effect to it, which will spark a backlash among writers and actors.

This would then also lead to defining what is considered "created by AI". In other words, if I just toss some story ideas at AI, it writes something then I come behind it and refine it... is that AI? Is it human-made? Is it an "AI collaboration"?

I think over time that if we get multiple strikes, it's going to be as that line gets pushed further and further back.
