Disney posted mixed results for its fiscal third-quarter despite ongoing streaming woes and massive restructuring costs resulting from cost-cutting and pulling content from its platforms.
Subscriber losses continued over the last three months, with the company reporting 146.1 million Disney+ subscribers during the most recent quarter, a 7.4% decrease from the previous quarter and a larger loss than Wall Street expected.
The majority of subscriber losses came from Disney+ Hotstar, where the company saw a 24% drop in users after it lost out on the rights to Indian Premier League cricket matches.
Revenue from Disney's media and entertainment distribution segment, which includes the company's direct-to-consumer streaming services, fell 1% during the quarter.
Here are the key numbers from Disney's report:
EPS: $1.03 per share adjusted, versus 95 cents per share expected, according to a Refinitiv consensus survey
Revenue: $22.33 billion, versus $22.5 billion expected, according to Refinitiv
Disney+ total subscriptions: 146.1 million, versus 151.1 million expected, according to StreetAccount

Disney+ will begin cracking down on password-sharing in 2024 in an effort to drive monetization, Disney CEO Bob Iger said on the company’s Q2 earnings call on Wednesday.
“We are actively exploring ways to address account sharing and the best options for paying subscribers to share their accounts with friends and family,” he said. “Later this year, we will begin to update our subscriber agreements with additional terms and our sharing policies. And we will roll out tactics to drive monetization sometime in 2024.”

The reality is, outside of the occasional SW property that I might want to watch, a lot of their new stuff just isn’t very exciting. Or it’s oversaturation of an existing product (like Marvel).
I’ll occasionally throw on Hamilton in the background. Or maybe watch a Nat Geo show inbetween work sessions. But that’s it.

If I wasn’t in the middle of Boy Meets World with the kids, I’d cancel

It started off hot, but now it's garbage. After the nostalgia wore off and bad content (with the exception of a few) I cancelled. I am about to do the same for Max as well. I am finding it harder and harder to find decent content to watch.

That's all Disney is now is nostalgia. If you don't have children I can't see any reason why you need to subscribe to their streaming service. They are incapable of creating solid original content because their writers lack the talent. The only thing a majority of their writers do is check various boxes for diversity purposes.

I have kids and Disney+ is essential.
I’ve watched Toy Story 47 times.

I'll be cancelling this month. Not worth it with have poor the Marvel series have been. I'll reup for specifics like Mando, but that's all.

I like Max. Some of the greatest series of all time, TCM stuff, and a lot of movies. I don't watch much tv so i have a ton left: still on first season of Curb, never watched Barry, Succession, Righteous Gemstones, Deadwood or The Last of Us. Disney+ pales in comparison, and I have no faith in them improving the quality.

Nonsense. When my boys were younger there was no D+ and they somehow managed to watch every Pixar movie and MCU outing eleventybillion times.
Buy physical media and stop paying monthly fees.

They realized that Netflix had a huge win financially when they cracked down and forced a ton of new subscribers.

Ever since I learned you can have different phone plans on one account… when there’s a new offer, I just change one plan. I’ve got Disney, espn, Hulu, Apple Music, and discovery+ thru Verizon.
I wonder what they get paid by phone carriers that offer free subs?
