The Walt Disney Co. powered up a strong June quarter, highlighted by a 14.4 million gain in Disney+ streaming subscribers and a robust rebound in theme park revenue — topping Wall Street expectations on most metrics.

Disney+ paid customers stood at 152.1 million as of July 2, the end of the conglomerate's third quarter of fiscal 2022. The pickup of 14.4 million for the flagship streamer beat analyst forecasts of a 10 million sequential gain.

quote:

Disney reported $21.5 billion on the top line for the quarter ended July 2, up 26% year over year and fueled by a 70% revenue jump in the parks, experiences and products segment. Net income rose 53%, to $1.4 billion, translating into adjusted earnings of $1.09 per share. Wall Street analysts on average expected Disney revenue coming in at $20.62 billion with earnings of $1.00 per share, per Refinitiv data.

Disney+ Basic, which is the name of the plan with ads, will launch Dec. 8 in the U.S. for $7.99/month. That's the price of the current ad-free version of Disney+, which at that time will bump up to $10.99/month, a 38% increase, and will be known as Disney+ Premium.

The ad-supported version of Disney+ will include all the same content that is available in the ad-free tier, although some titles may not run advertising, according to the company.

Disney+ Basic will launch with about four minutes of ads per hour. It will start with 15- and 30-second spots but will expand to a "full suite of ad products" over time

Yeah I can live with 4 minutes an hour.

We’ll see if that’s worth saving 36 dollars a year.

There is a theory floating around that Bob Chapek is actually trying to weed out the woke bullshite. All of these goofy arse movies coming out of pixar were greenlit from Bob Igers tenure and the people that are fighting back with the woke/trans agenda are all of Iger's hires. Its also why so many people in the media have been super critical of Chapek since he took over.

He just recently got extended by the board even after all of these disasters (lightyear/turning red) which tells me that the board trusts him to fix this mess. Its going to take some time, but I'm starting to buy into the theory more and more.

Pretty common business practice for streamers these days. Even Netflix is adding commercials.

Yeah well, to millennials, Disney is status. If you aren’t making at least one pilgrimage to Orlando a year, you aren’t living life. I can’t tell you how many schmucks I’ve listened to blather on about how many trips they took and what resort/package they employed.

Be interesting if the mouse keeps newer generations as enthralled. Bad Star Wars and comic book re-treads can’t stay interesting forever.

And they have added shite to the parks over the years. Like the Star Wars stuff. You’ve got Harry Potter and Star Wars. The adult women that love Harry Potter is pretty strong. Same with adult men that love Star Wars.

Nice try
quote:

The price increases reflect the growing operating loss for Disney’s streaming services. Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ combined to lose $1.1 billion in the third quarter, $300 million more than the average analyst estimate. The increased operating loss occurred even while Disney added about 15 million new Disney+ subscribers in the quarter, about 5 million more than analysts estimated.

* Disney+ with no ads is increasing $3 per month to $10.99
* Disney+ with ads will be $7.99 per month
quote:

Disney unveiled a new pricing structure that incorporates an advertising-supported Disney+ as part of an effort to make its streaming business profitable.

Disney announced last month that ESPN+ with ads would go up 43% to $9.99 per month.

Disney has stated it plans to lose money on Disney+ until 2024.
