In 1989 l, we had Batman. The following summer, Dick Tracy, staring Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, and Madonna, was going to be the season’s blockbuster. Even had Danny Elfman as the composer and songs written by Stephen Sondheim.

It made bank.

Admittedly, I don’t remember what the critical reception was or what the public perception was. Regardless, the movie has all but disappeared.

How many of you have seen it? What are your thoughts?

For those of you who haven’t seen it, are you even aware of its existence?

It’s on the level of Sin City and The Watchmen when it comes to visually putting a comic book onto the big screen. Haven’t seen that movie since I was a kid and now I desperately want to find it

Agree about the Sin City part. A simple, bright color palette with painted backgrounds.

I remember it as being faithful to the cartoon version but also remember it was viewed as a mild disappointment rather than a financial success.

It was interesting that Madonna and Beatty dated for a while. Famously they were captured in her Truth or Dare documentary. Aside from being promiscuous they didn't have much in common. Madonna made it a point to corner him on the documentary and ask why he tried to remain so private. That's a fair question for a celebrity. For his part he asked (paraphrasing here from an old memory) if she did anything at all that was private (and therefore authentic).

Went to the theater to see it. Bought a toy tommy gun at the toy store in the mall afterwards. Loved it.

I think I had the lunchbox too. I was born in 85 and distinctly remember my dad taking me to see Batman, Ghostbusters 2, Dick Tracy, and TMNT in the theaters in 89/90. What a time to be a kid

I definitely remember the tie-ins. Pretty sure I had a lunchbox too. I remember this, TMNT, and Batman just being freakin everywhere when I was a kid.

Cleaned up at the Oscars for some reason too. Seven noms, three wins. Only Dances with Wolves had a better haul that year.

But then the IP just disappeared. I can't think of another IP that just vanished as swiftly as this one did. There's probably some Hollywood legend about it but I've never looked.

It is absolutely gorgeous though.

My mom took me and my sister to the mall theater in Lubbock to see it, and I loved it. I still remember my mom gasping at the big reveal at the end.

After the movie, I got this Dick Tracy figure and my sister got the Madonna one.

I also had the official movie magazine, and a book with an audio cassette. I'm probably forgetting some things because merch for big movies was so ubiquitous.

It is weird how Dick Tracy was buried, though. According to Wikipedia, Beatty and the Chicago Tribune company who owned the comic strip were in a legal battle over the film/TV rights for decades, which might be why we never really even saw the movie on cable.

I liked it - didn't love it. Only watched it a first time a few years back, and then again last year. Decent replay value, but not something must-see.

The highlight is the 3 Sondheim songs which are fantastic.

Dick Tracy was a “what if?” for comic book movies. Watching it felt like complete immersion into the pages of a comic. No CGI at all.

after that, we got CGI crap
