I was 8 when it was released. I probably saw it twice. I liked it but thought the masks/makeup on the characters were weird and they creeped me out a bit. It wasn't on the rewatch VHS circuit like Star Wars, Batman, Never Ending Story, Princess Bride, Goonies, Big, Pretty Woman, Breakfast Club, Top Gun, Ferris Bueller, etc... It was beneath those films for me during that awesome time of my life where I rode bikes, watched movies on VHS repeatedly with friends (because most kids didn't have cable), shot BB guns, and generally had no supervision in the summers.

Pretty Woman is a weird addition to that selection

Batman was the first movie I ever remember seeing in theaters. I even remember my parents telling me I needed to take a nap before the movie so I wouldn't be tired later.
I also remember going to see Dick Tracy the following summer, but I remember very little about it, other than the unique visuals and strange looking bad guys.

But then the IP just disappeared. I can't think of another IP that just vanished as swiftly as this one did. There's probably some Hollywood legend about it but I've never looked.
It's fascinating actually.
Basically the studio wanted to do a sequel and Beatty didn't and the studio was going to move forward without him.
HOWEVER, as per the original agreement between Beatty and Tribune, he was allowed to hold onto the Dick Tracy rights as long as he produced some form of television or film project featuring Dick Tracy.
So every 10 years or so he shows up on a local TV station dressed as Dick Tracy and does an interview in charachter to keep the rights

That surprises me because I remember it as something of a flop.
The merchandising was on the level of Batman. The malls were yellow with Dick Tracy apparel and accessories and toys. But the sales didn't follow suit, and you ended up with Dick Tracy toys in the bargain bin for years after.
Beatty still owns the film and future film rights, which only laps if he stops making Dick Tracy films or TV programs. He's extended his ownership by occasionally appearing as Dick Tracy in interviews on TCM and ticking off the requirement in that minimal fashion.

Found the full movie streaming on some weird site I’ve never heard of.

Just watched this trailer, and wow, what a different time the late 80's early 90's were. A "kids movie" and the trailer is just mob guys shooting up places, Madonna wearing skimpy outfits and taking off her clothes.

He's currently 89, wonder what his contingency plan is...assigning the rights to a family member so they can keep dragging out the contract

At this point he needs to start making annual appearance, health willing, to maximize the 10-year time frame.

The bluray is easily available. Can also purchase it on prime video.

I remember that movie and the cover art at the local video store vividly. It does feel like it disappeared

I was a kid that summer, and pretty sure I had a Dick Tracy t-shirt. The product tie-ins were everywhere. Heavily marketed to children.
I never saw it. Never had much interest in it, aside from the proto-Apple watch in the commercials. But the marketing was utterly ubiquitous.

Keep in mind, Who Framed Roger Rabbit was a kids movie owned by Disney that feature sexual icon Jessica Rabbit and the plot surrounded a special chemical that melted Cartoon characters alive.
My mom took me, my cousins and two of my friends from school to see it in the theatre for my 8th birthday.

I know. But we found it hidden and would watch it while the parents were at work and then would put it back where we found it. I was the youngest kid, so I benefited from the mischievousness of my older siblings.

I remember loving that movie as a kid but I just watched the trailer above and really don't remember it at all.
