Is “Mulholland Drive,” David Lynch’s hypnotic and surreal ode to la la land, really the best film of the aughts? According to 200 movie experts, it seems that it is. World of Reel surveyed film critics, actors, directors, academics, and curators from over a dozen countries to compile a list of the best films released between 2000-2009.

Lynch’s surreal neo-noir bested Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood” (#2) by just 3 votes. Almost 2/3 of the poll’s participants were American. Established publications, including Variety, The New York Times, The L.A. Times, USA Today, Film Comment, The Wall Street Journal and Vanity Fair, participated in the poll. Each critic was asked to send their five picks, unranked, for the decade. There were 13 films in the top 30 that were in a foreign language, beating the previous record holder of 10 from our 2010s poll.

8) Spirited Away (Hayao Miyazaki)

Well-deserved. It's a great movie and there aren't many like it. Pretty good list overall, but Zodiac at #3? frick outta here

i'd have included Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Pan's Labyrinth in the T10, myself

Some good ones (both popular and critically acclaimed) that didn't make the top 50:

Apocalypto
District 9
A Serious Man
American Psycho
In Bruges
A History of Violence

I love mulholland dr, but not as much as 1,2,5,6,7,10.

There’s a lot of really good movies on that top 50 list though. Not bad.

Isn't everyone a movie expert with the internet now and RT flooded with critics.

If that's the best film of the 2000s then it's best viewed once because I'd never rewatch it again. Blue Velvet, yes; Lost Highway, yes...that movie? Beyond incomprehensible.

No country is better than there will be blood.

I will not stand for this revisionist history

It's not revisionist. Critics have always slobbed There Will Be Blood's knob. I think it's a great movie, but I also liked No Country more.

24) Almost Famous (Cameron Crowe)
38) Miami Vice (Michael Mann)
47) A.I. Artificial Intelligence (Steven Spielberg)
48) Ghost World (Terry Zwigoff)

Lot of good movies finally getting their due in these polls.

The film/cultural world will never allow themselves to admit that 24th Hour and Inside Man are Spike Lee's best films.

Allow me to third the opinion that No Country is easily a better movie than There Will Be Blood.

The Nolan Bros will melt their dicks off about Lost in Translation beating out TDK, I'm sure.

Same.

I've never understood the fascination with There Will Be Blood.

mulholland drive is worthy of that nod.
I think children of men is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen so I’m pleased it’s on that list

I haven’t see all the movies on the list, but all my personal favorites from this century are included. I’d of course have some listed higher than they are, but I’m very glad to see them included.

Good to see assasination of Jesse James recognized, although it should be higher.

I’m in the same boat. I’ve read all the symbolic meanings and I still don’t get it. I like weird movies so I enjoyed it but I didn’t get all the “meanings” the movie was supposed to represent

Yeah. TWBB was well made and acted but not as entertaining as No Country. No Country is great.

Mulholland Dr is great, but

quote:

3) Zodiac (David Fincher)

I seriously don't get the love for this movie.

It was good, but not best of the decade good.

quote:

1) Mulholland Drive (David Lynch)
2) There Will Be Blood (Paul Thomas Anderson)
3) Zodiac (David Fincher)
4) In the Mood For Love (Wong Kar-Wai)
5) No Country For Old Men (Joel Coen)
6) Children of Men (Alfonso Cuaron)
7) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gondry)
8) Spirited Away (Hayao Miyazaki)
9) Yi Yi: A One and A Two (Edward Yang)
10) Lost in Translation (Sofia Coppola)

Haven't even heard of 4 of these films. No Dark Knight? No Return of the King?

Every time someone posts an RT or "critics poll" top 10 or 100 film lists, they're always, always shite.
