Robert California was great as a guest character, but it's hard to believe they kept him around for a full season. But that's what the Office does, take a joke that gets a good reaction and stretch it out and try to repeat it.

Michael was an imbecile so I could buy him driving into a lake because he misinterpreted a GPS direction

But he wasn’t though. He was very competent and even smart at times, and a great salesman. There were several times when the writers made him literally stupid, and the lake thing was one of them (hamster city was another one). Michael was quirky and “stupid” sometimes, but he wasn’t literally retarded (which you’d have to be to drive a car into a lake)….it doesn’t even work if it’s played like him doing it to prove a point about “machines” (which is how they tried to play it).

That’s one of my least favorite things they ever did with Michael.

I’ll defend seasons 8 and 9 a little bit. Sure, there were some bad things throughout. But there were also some good ones too. And some great additions to the show (Clark and Pete, for example, were great IMO).

The problem is mainly Andy as manager, and the Andy/Erin storyline. I hate those more than the Brian thing, but mainly because they seemed to dominate the later seasons. But the Brian thing was the worst for me.

But the end of S9 was great, and the finale was damn near perfect.

Also, I thought Robert California was a great addition to the show. He was such a 180 from Michael that it just worked for me. Also Kathy Bates was solid as well IMO.

The Office is one of my favorite shows of all time. I watch it almost daily and can quote most of it.
I feel that. I’ve seen the first 7 seasons probably 10x more than I’ve watched the last 2 though.

You should read this article about a new Bj Novak movie set in Texas.

quote:

But I knew that Novak’s West Texas schooling wouldn’t be complete without a trip to an oil-patch bar. Which is how we found ourselves at the Red Iguana. The bar was packed with rodeo cowboys and oil-field hands, many still sporting their grimy work clothes. In this crowd, Novak painfully stood out. I was pretty sure his pure white Pumas were to blame for the stares directed toward us. Finally, one of the biggest dudes in the room lumbered over in his crude-spattered coveralls.

How come no one ever talks about what douchebags Jim's business partners were? The way they treated him during phone calls and all was ridiculous. The whole Jim and his sports agency thing was the worst thing about the Office.

As massive of an office fan as I am I watched seasons 8 and 9 one time and one time only just to see how it ends. Other than that I stick to 1-6 when wanting a fix

They frick up at the end. The show ran too long.
Only because NBC didn’t put a blank check on the table and tell Steve Carrell to name his price to stay

ETA: if Michael is still around, they probably don’t have most of the worst plotlines from the last 2 seasons…Deangelo Vickers, Andy as manager, Nelly, the sound guy

I disagree. He was awful and worked on almost zero levels.

And it’s not even Will Farrell’s fault really. I appreciate what they were trying to do…Ferrell was a still a pretty huge comedy name at the time, and they were swinging for the fences. But Carrell was just too big a part of the show to replace in that kind of space. That’s why I think Spader was a much better option since he wasn’t anything like Michael really.

But Ferrell’s whole introduction when he kept grabbing the cake with his hand and eating it was just bad. The best thing he ever did/said was when he made fun of Jim and Pam for always trying to show pics of their kids to everybody.

Good call. I always noticed that too. However, I think that had more to do with him telling them one thing and then acting differently when it came time to fulfill his promises. Also remember that he made the choice to be out initially, and then tried to get back in once it started being successful.

But ignoring S8 and S9 means you do miss out on some really good television though. Robert California is great, and there is a lot of funny shite that comes with that. You also miss out on some great Gabe moments too. Plus a lot more stuff.

Yes there are some bad things in those seasons, but there’s also some great ones though.

I’ve always said, the worst thing to happen to The Office was The Hangover being such a huge hit. Because that made them shoehorn Andy into a much bigger role than he should’ve been.

The writers said they couldn’t make him a complete idiot like in the British version because Americans get more annoyed by the incompetence than they are amused by it
