TBS had on the 5 year engagement on and I flipped onto it (never seen the movie)

They had Alison brie out there doing the most stereotypical British accent and I thought it was a joke don’t get me wrong I love Allison Brie, but having her out there with Emily blunt doing an SNL style accent had me so confused. Like why did she NEED to be in that role

Feel like accents seem to be a one way street in that sense

I don’t care about stuff like this but it’s at least a fair question.

I mean, Brits were outraged over Rene Zelwegger being cast as a freaking British character from a book for Bridget Jones, so I can only imagine how they’d have felt if say Ed Harris was cast as Winston Churchill or Laura Linney as Queen Elizabeth in any of those movies.

Agreed.

The Death of Stalin is Brits and Americans playing Russians without changing their accents even a little bit. It works just fine. But it's also a dark comedy, in a drama it would probably be a pretty bad idea.

It’s not a problem, but it’s definitely hypocritical when British filmmakers scoff at Americans playing British roles.

While not based on anyone historical, JK Rowling had a rule of no American actors to play British parts for the Harry Potter series.

Yes I know who frickin Dick Cheney is.
There’s nothing special enough about him to warrant a movie.

They are so protective of their small island that they get their panties in a twist if something British isn't authentic.

This thread really shows how the Brits have taken over American cinema and especially Star Wars franchise.
