EXCLUSIVE: Quentin Tarantino will be reuniting for the third time with Brad Pitt in the director’s final film The Movie Critic. Unclear if Pitt will play the title character, but I think he is. Last time out, Pitt won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and he also starred for Tarantino in Inglourious Basterds. I also think Sony Pictures will be back as the studio distributing the film, with Stacey Sher producing and a 2025 release eyed.

Tarantino has been circumspect on the last movie, but he opened up a bit to Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye at Cannes in May, when the filmmaker presided over a screening of Rolling Thunder. He said at the time the movie was set in California the year of that film’s release, which was 1977, and that it “is based on a guy who really lived but was never really famous, and he used to write movie reviews for a porno rag.”

The inspiration goes back to a job Tarantino had as a teen, loading porn magazines into a vending machine and emptying quarters out of the cash dispenser. “All the other stuff was too skanky to read, but then there was this porno rag that had a really interesting movie page,” he told Bamigboye. There was one critic in particular Tarantino liked, who wrote snarky and smart as the second-string critic.

Hard to believe Tarantino is just going to hang it up after this one. But if he does....What a body of work!

I don't think he'll retire. He talks about wanting to hang it up, then in the next breath, he'll talk about how Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott are inspirations because they're still making great movies in their 80s.

I hope he doesn’t stop making films.

I get that he got this weird thing he’s doing but why box yourself in? I’m sure he’s going to want to make another one in 5 years. Be a real shame if doesn’t do anything else.

I think he intends to retire.

And then I think in 5-10 years he will have an idea and stop being retired.

no kidding

Death Proof and Jackie Brown are his only real misses and even those still have some redeeming qualities about them

I think QT genuinely hates the direction the film industry has moved into over the last 10-15 years. I really don’t think he wants to make movies anymore. Write a book or play or TV show? Sure. But I think he’s done with filmmaking

Also he has said many times that most if not all directors get worse with time. I think he personally would include Scorsese and Scott in that category.

I think he does.

Unprecedented success. Tight crews, stars, and recurring actors are all in GREAT movies.

The market is turning. He'll go out on top doing nothing but satire and quality films that were accepted wholly by the miserable PC brigade that ruined films... And, well, everything.

That said, it's a lot of pressure for such a genius to release his final work.

Doesn’t he have a young kid? I think that’s also why he wants to step away from film.

Jackie Brown is not only his best film, but the best film in that genre.

Jackie Brown is far from a favorite but it’s not a miss by any means.

I don't disagree with this at all but others would argue for Pulp Fiction or Basterds. For me, it would be Jackie Brown followed by Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
