One of the main reasons the film works is because Slim Pickens is completely into it. Harvey was great, but he was smirking all the way through it. Little and Wilder were great, but they were delivering setups and jokes.

But, this film works because Slim Pickens played it straight, IMHO (ETA: And Khan's brilliant performance - she's the greatest comedic actress the U.S. has ever produced, again, IMHO.)

the entire movie from start to finish is quotable.

i probably know almost every line in the movie word for word.

i enjoy just reading this thread over in all of their voices.

quote:

quote:

Now who can argue with that??? I think we're all indebted to Gabby Johnson for clearly stating what needed to be said. I'm particulary glad that these lovely children were here today to hear that speech. Not only was it authentic frontier gibberish, it expressed a courage little seen in this day and age.

I think most people knew that Alex Karras was a former NFL player. He was an All Pro.

He also later became the dad on "Webster"

I'm paying you boys to build a railroad not jump around like a bunch of Kansas City ****.

Candy-gram for Mongo
Mongo like candy.

Excuse me sir, but to reveal a family secret - my grandmother was Dutch.

Hold it, hold it! What the Hell is that shite?
I meant a song, a real song. Something like Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.
Swing low?
Sweet chariot?
Don't know that one huh?
Well, how 'bout the Camp town ladies?

The first 45 minutes of that movie are classic.

Not a quote but when the sheriff is talking to Gene Wilder about being a drunk & asks him to raise his right hand up. Wilder does & it does not move. Sheriff, see, you are ok. Wilder, raising his left hand, shaking like a leaf: yea, but I'm left handed. And when Mango slugged that horse..priceless

and wilder goes.. "yeah, but i shoot with this hand"

haha i like when the town is getting ransacked and one of the locals goes, "well that's the end of this suit" while being drug across the dirt/mud

Governor: Two hundred thousand acres!? Two hundred thousand acres!? What'll it cost, man, what'll it cost!?

Lamarr: A box of these. [Sets out a box of paddle balls]

Governor: Are you crazy!? They'll never go for it! Then again, they just might. Those red devils... They love toys! [Tries to play paddle ball and fails] These toys are defective.

Lamarr: Quite right, sir. [Playing with the paddle ball without issue]
