Binging The Office

History:
I watched every week religiously when it was actually on the air, but I had very limited re-watching. This has made some of the old episodes like they are almost completely new to me, which is a huge plus. (wish I could have the same effect with Seinfeld!)
I only spottily watched the last 2-3 seasons when it aired because the show clearly jumped the shark.
Anyway, in about a week, I've gotten all the way up to the Season 4 premier. Main observations:
It is absolutely unbelievable how iconic virtually every episode is in the first 3 seasons. I mean, just pure, utter gold.
That's What She Said - as associated as it has become with the show, they really do make somewhat sparing use of it...with the effect of it being completely killer almost every time. My current favorite is when Michael suspects Dwight of subterfuge so he advises him to think about his future "long and hard". When Dwight offers a half-hearted "TWSS", Michael is deeply offended and whispers "don't you dare"...as if it is sacred.
So far, Gay Witch Hunt is the best episode. Both the writers and actors on fire. Every line perfect.
First moment of jumping the shark - Safety Training. The whole thing with Michael jumping off the roof is just too over the top and stupid. I see now that it was written by B.J. Novak - who also wrote The Initiation from earlier in the same season. The stuff in the barn with Dwight and Mose is dangerously close to too over the top as well.
Angela - I had either never noticed or else forgotten how well her character is done. She is legit homphobic towards Oscar.
Jim and Pam - I don't understand why this is such a polarizing topic. Jim is awesome and so is Pam. Just because they aren't perfect people doesn't change this fact. This is one of the better will the/won't they arcs in TV history...so stop complaining about it!
Dwight's pepper spray in The Negotiation. When he gets Andy with it at the very end, I almost died. Had COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN about this.
I'm still a homer for the original British version, but it is amazing at how well the Americans took this thing and made it their own. Looking forward to the rest.

Bite your toungue. That is one of the best episodes, IMO.

I think you will appreciate it more when you get there again. I am currently rewatching and on the end of 7. 6 and 7 have a lot more funny moments than I remembered.

I’m also rewatching the entire show from the beginning. I’m somewhere in season 4 now.
The more I watch it, the more I’m convinced it’s one of the best shows that’s ever been put on television. And I don’t say that lightly.

You've only seen 3 seasons dude, and talking about opinions formed over 9. Why don't you report back when you end the show. True, the whole will they/won't they early on is phenomenal and riveting. I don't this is a spoiler because you said you've seen some of the last 2-3 seasons...but once they do end up getting together there's just nothing there for the viewer. I mean, we still like Jim beucase he's a cool "joe everyman" and pam is ok in doses but when the "will they/wont' they" dynamic is removed they're no different than most other characters. On top of that, they get majorly insufferable for a while. Especially with kid. You have any friends or coworkers that have a kid and then become less likeable? yeah that's waht happens. They get far less funny and far less likeable.

"Jumping the shark" is a moment that a show just doesn't come back from. This was definitely not one of those moments. Almost anything Michael does is stupid and over the top - that's kind of the point. But it's supposed to be funny because Jim, Pam, Darryl, etc have to talk him out of inadvertently trying to kill himself.
Dwight accidentally firing a gun through the office floor (either late S7 or S8, I forget) and getting away with it was far more ridiculous than Michael's staged safety demonstration.

This. I'm currently halfway through season 7, and while there's a drop off from seasons 2-5, seasons 6 and 7 are still much stronger than I remember from first watch.

You’re nuts. That episode is genius.

The later seasons don't get as much credit as they should. Especially after Michael left. They are still great seasons even without him. Just not as amazing as 2-5 or even 2-7

Speaking of that, I just watched Fun Run where Dwight fired the starter's gun...some kind of large-caliber revolver.

The biggest takeaway from seasons 7-9 on my rewatch is how funny Gabe is. Mainly due to his stellar role on Silicon Valley

Jim is awesome and so is Pam
Jim is a slacker who never tries at anything he does from his job to his marriage. He constantly fails to just try at anything. But he seems to be a somewhat nice guy.
Pam is an outrageously bitchy and self-centered thundercunt with a cute face, world class rack, and great body.

Disagree. He's a slacker much of his tenure there because I mean, wouldn't you be too in that job? But he did interview for the corporate position in season 2 or 3ish and at the end *SPOILER for OP I guess...*................does branch off to start his own company.

not sure how you can say this abotu the marriage, jim is probably too much of a tryhard to be honest.

The more I watch the later seasons, I agree with this. Really only bad episodes are those few transition episodes after Michael left. Although they did ruin Andy.
Having said that I will put Season 2-5 up against any TV show as the greatest stretch of TV ever.

No. I wouldn't. I hate that attitude. I cannot stand slackers in the business world. I've had a variety of jobs, always busted my arse whatever the job was. I'd have fired Jim if I was his boss. Team Dwight all day.

I just finished season 4 of the rewatch. Dwight is still awesome. Jim is lazy but he is funny. Pamela and Michael are annoying.

I've said that for years on here, and it's true. Now, obviously there is a huge dropoff immediately after Michael leaves, and justifiably so. The whole Will Ferrell shite was annoying as frick a lot of times. But once things settle down in S8, it and S9 are actually pretty good quality. There's nothing wrong with a show not being as good as its best several-season span. But people love shitting all over The Office once Michael left, and truthfully, the episodes are actually pretty good. And the final season is great the way the worked in the actual documentary, and in the way they brought everyone back in the finale (including Michael). Dwight firing Jim and Pam so they get severance, etc.

A Honolulu Christmas, a Pulp Fiction Christmas, a Muslim Christmas, Moroccan Christmas — Mo Rocca Christmas. I don’t want it. Christmas is Christmas is Christmas is Christmas. I don’t want no Kwanza wreath. I don’t need no dreidle in my face. That’s its own thing. And who’s that black Santa for? I don’t care. I know Santa ain’t black. I could care less. I want Christmas. Just give me plain Baby Jesus lyin’ in a manger Christmas!"

Honestly, the case can be made that last 5 or so episode story arc is as strong as any in seasons 2-5. Made me wish that we got to see more banter between Dwight as regional manager and Jim as assistant regional manager.
