He may not be the GOAT, but he is definitely a GOAT. Not many above him on my comedic actor list.

I've got news for you--he was a god of comedy WAY before that came out. We all know his history--SNL, Caddyshack, Stripes, Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters, etc. etc. etc.

Exactly.

His SNL group was legit GOAT comedy. He gets a pass on just that alone.

He sealed that title with Caddyshack

Carl Spackler : This is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff.

He did several very funny characters, but my favorite was What About Bob.

To me he is not as great as everyone makes him out to be.

Even taking relatively long breaks, he was the biggest thing in comedy in the 1980s, possibly excepting Eddie Murphy.

Him merely being in the movie guaranteed big box office, beginning with Stripes.

But since around 08-09 when Zombieland came out, he has been made into some god of comedy.

But he's also just a great guy. He shows up at golf tournaments and goofs with people. He'll join your party at a bar and just hang. He not only seems like an "everyman", he IS an everyman.

My brother sat at a bar with him after a concert in a small venue and they talked for over an hour and bought each other drinks. My brother said he was just sitting there by himself and he went and sat next to him and they just chatted it up.

I like him a lot more than I used to after that.

To me, his best work is when he's given the kind of stuff you say to your best friends when you're tore up. He does "Your f'ed up best friend" better than most.

He's great as the silliest MF'er in the room.

He is a national treasure.

Along with his acting, he called one of the greatest cubs games in the history of baseball when he did a guest host job after Harry had his heart attack.

Except it’s not because he claims Murray blew up after the bulk of his career when that’s just not true at all

It proved my point quicker than I expected.

Some people can't differentiate a person being a really good dude and their actual work.

Read a little closer. That's when the internet started acting like he was the greatest gift to comedy that's ever lived.

I don't know how you can say the comments proved your point, but that's your opinion.

No one here said "his film work is average but he's a great guy".

If your OPINION is his work doesn't measure up then of course you're entitled to it and no other poster will ever change your mind. However, MAJORITY opinion is that his catalog of work is one of the best in TV/film history.

His "really good dude" persona just enhances his iconic status.
