What does this mean? Isn't a movie that's more entertaining to watch by definition a better movie? If not, I have no idea how to rate a movie.

No. Anchorman is one of the most entertaining movies I can think of, but does that make it a better work of art? Absolutely not. Entertaining should only be a single factor when judging a film.

Goodfellas, but I like Casino a lot.
My biggest problem with Casino is De Niro is too much of a wimp. You're married to a whore and she's giving YOUR MONEY to her lowlife pimp ex. Hell no. He was connected to enough mobbed up dudes who would easily put that guy in a hole in the ground.

how are two movies which are based off of two different real life situations/events a photocopy of the other

Because, thematically and structurally, they are basically the same movie

Goodfellas. Casino would have been much better if I did not have to listen to Sharon Stone scream for 3 hours.

his mom was a bitch in Blow but Penélope Cruz was the f-ing worst ever. That bitch acting like she had nothing to do with him ending up in jail infuriated me.

I don't consider Casino a great movie.

Goodfellas, and it's not even close.

I like Casino more, overall. But some of the scenes in Goodfellas... Just fan-frickin-tastic. The prison dinner scene, the long tracking shot in the restaurant, Pesci making Liota shite himself over the word "funny." But Casino just has more pizazz due to, I think, it taking place in Vegas and Pesci narrates while he basically goes HAAM.

Goodfellas... Casino is entertaining but one of Scorsese's most flawed films.

Goodfellas is a masterpiece. Sharon Stone in Casino is some of the best unintentional comedy of all time.

I was waiting for this comment.

Everybody picks on Stone. I don't get it. She is PATHETIC because the character is a PATHETIC junkie. No such thing as a cool junkie. She was damaged. Think about any episode of intervention you have seen? She plays that perfectly.

Goodfellas is still better but not by leaps and bounds.

Both are great movies but IMO Casino edges out Goodfellas. Main reason is I think De Niro is a much better lead guy than Ray Liotta. Also think the soundtrack in Casino is better.

ETA: I think Joe Pesci is a lot better in Casino as well.

Great topic and a legitimate discussion.

Certainly you have apples to apples with Deniro and Pesci - really, Casino is about their characters, with Stone as a plus 1.

I say this - the "What makes me so funny?" scene is the best scene of either film. Joe deserved the Oscar on the strength of that scene. Stone was also superb in Casino and I would say she more than makes up for no Liotta or Bracco (who were outstanding in Goodfellas, but not as good as Stone in Casino).

Then you have Deniro - I think he played a stronger character in Goodfellas, but a more intriguing one in Casino.

Marty used music very well in both films, but probably was a little more on his game, overall in Goodfellas.

I give the edge to Goodfellas as a complete package (probably the cocaine paranoia helicopter day slightly trumps Stone's wonderful meltdown scene) - at the same time, about the only 3 movies I will watch, from wherever I pick them up to the end are The Wrath of Khan, Shawshank and Casino.

My, that was a complicated answer, wasn't it?

Goodfellas.

Could be that SS is such a huge count in Casino, which I guess was intended, but still.

Another one...I don't get it. I couldn't understand if you were comparing a drama to a slapstick comedy and you said this, but for 2 movies of the same genre, how is the one that is more enjoyable not the better movie?

Take the Rocky series for example. I think everyone would agree that the first one is the best and most well-made film. But if I had to choose which was my favorite, IV wins for entertainment value.

Goodfellas is more memorable and entertaining. I don't think I'll ever get tired of the writing, characters, pacing, etc.

Casino is a solid film, but to me it will always live in the shadow of Goodfellas.

If Goodfellas were a 10, Casino would be a 9.5
