That's one of the worst lines in movie history and almost killed it for me.

That frickin' kid didn't ask to be rescued and didn't want to be. That shite and guilt should've never been unloaded on him.

That line was a big, red sore thumb that didn't at all fit the movie and should've never been uttered. Especially in light of the final scene where Ryan is weeping over his grave or whatever.

The captain didn't die rescuing ryan. The captain died doing what the frick he was told.

It was petty and spoke to the captain's bitterness and resentment toward his mission and he made those feelings Ryan's problem. Now if that was the intent of the line however, it worked.

Ricky Bobby laid some voodoo on ryan and he shouldn't have. That was a petty, bullshite thing to say. Ryan had nothing he needed to "earn".

An incredible movie almost ruined by one petty, angry and resentful line. Ryan's response should've been. Oh, so you want me to kill Upham"?

The captain deserved better than all that. Instead of having him go out, in some way classy. Spielberg had him go out as an angry resentful bitch. And who knows, maybe that's what he was.
