Sure cannot argue with your other two licks as well. Juat rewatched LoA a couple of weeks ago for about the ninth time ... he gave us an incredible portrayal. Also loved him in a little known underrated 1985 flick by the name of 'Creator.' Highly recommend that little movie ... and your wife or girlfriend will love it.

O'Toole is one of my all time favorites. So many of his movies are in my list of favorites: Beckett, My Favorite Year...he was awesome.

It blows my mind that the part was originally offered to Marlon Brando and that Albert Finney was originally cast the lead. As things worked out, O'Toole was the perfect choice for the role.

The voice acting he did for Ratatouille can't be ignored either. All-time great for sure.

Peter O'Toole - Lawrence of Arabia - Just a magnificent performance. #2 is Mifune in Seven Samurai.
Ellen Burstyn - Requiem for a Dream - I think it's the most vulnerable performance ever put on film. She was robbed of the Oscar.

George C Scott-Patton.

He refused the academy award for his performance.

Joanne Woodward-The Three Faces Of Eve.

Robin Williams

I thought he was great in Mrs. Doubtfire. The comedic part sure, but I could feel the angst of losing his kids.

As someone else said, I am no expert.

I thought both Cruise and Hoffman were great in Rainman.

Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs is an obvious choice.

Paul Giamatti in Cinderella Man is one of my favorite acting performances I can remember. DeNiro in Taxi Driver also comes to mind

For women, McDormand in Fargo was fantastic

I'll go best male and female leads in the same movie and say Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn in On Golden Pond

That was a masterclass by two legends

Robert De Niro - Raging Bull

The "I heard some things Joey" scene is the finest example of acting in American cinema history imo.

There is exist no Shakespearian soliloquy delivered by Olivier that will ever impress me as much as that scene.

A couple other mentions:
Walter Huston- The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Gene Hackman- The Chamber

I think Daniel Day Lewis's performances in My Left Foot, Gangs of New York and There will be Blood are the finest consistent performances in such a short stretch of time by any actor.

No mention of Paul Newman! Really? Cool Hand Luke?

Good list though, seriously.

Maybe Michael Caine in The Man Who Would Be King - though he really wasn't really lead.

Female - Meryl Streep - pick a movie.

Female: Cate Blanchett - Blue Jasmine She may be the greatest female lead in the world right now ... from her Elizabeth I roles to Veronica Guerin, The Gift, The Missing, etc., etc., etc., she is just incredible.

Never saw Blue Jasmine, to know, but agree she's one of the best current actors, and add these roles:
Marissa Wiegler-Hanna, The Aviator-Katharine Hepburn,Heaven-Philippa, The Shipping News-Petal, The Lord of the Rings movies-Galadriel, 2001 Bandits-Kate Wheeler
