Yes

But mostly because he's not the main guy in Caddyshack.

Modern Problems is underrated. Dabney Coleman was great in that. "I'm a god damn good looking man!"

The scene where he's snorting the powder around the bed is hilarious.

A hilarious movie. So underrated.

Underrated, sure. Great, yes. Better than Fletch? No.

My opinion also. I think of it as a Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray movie, with Chevy doing little more than cameos.

Just throwing this out there since I thought this movie was funny when I was a kid. I think Fletch and Caddyshack among others are clearly the answer you're looking for, but Modern Problems was great back in the day.

The other thing is - Chevy's career turned so quickly, it was jarring. He was leading films like the Vacation films, Fletch, etc., and then after a couple of stinkers, he was quickly relegated to support in other films. He was effectively washed up by his mid/late 40s

I feel like this is fairly common for comedic actors.

They are hot for a bit and everywhere, then the new thing would come along to take that spot. You had to branch out to keep getting new starring roles and investments.

Examples of both: Will Ferrell - didn't branch out
Jim Carrey - did

He's front and center on the movie poster, but I think that was more for audience draw, as he was red hot at the time. Danny gets the most screen time and is the character around which everything else revolves, though.

Meh. He tried and did a decent enough job with some solid dramedies (Stranger than Fiction, Everything Must Go). But he's not nearly as talented as the likes of Carrey, Robin Williams, Cranston, etc so I can see why it didn't stick.

Dude had a hell of a run on very limited comedic talent. And I love several of his movies.

Chevy in a supporting role. Foul Play.

That poor dwarf.

And it's better than any of the Vacation movies by far.

Caddyshack
After seeing documentaries about National Lampoon and Doug Kenney, I was astonished to find out that Caddyshack had been a critical flop. Not lying when I say that I laughed more at that movie than any previous film in the theater. I know it's considered a classic by the public, but response from critics depressed Kenney to no end.
