if i remember correctly, uncle Phil acknowledged that he'd faced prejudice as well as being a part of civil rights movement back in the day, but also valued being a contributing member of society and being a present father in a two parent household.

honestly, Fresh Prince and Family Matters were a good indicator of where we were in the 90s. nothing by any means was perfect, but we had a whole ton of white folk tuning in to cohesive black families for entertainment and not thinking about it in terms of race. it was just entertainment.

I very specifically remember an episode where Will stages a somewhat rowdy protest by boarding himself into his classroom at school because his mentors (Uncle Phil) were in protests in their youth. Phil then heavily chastised him for just trying to cause a scene to feel like he was apart of something rather than because he needed to. I think he said something like "we busted down doors so you could walk through them, not build them back up just so you could say you busted through them". Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

ETA: The episode is Those Were The Days.

That trailer actually doesn't look horrendous, but I find it hard to believe this won't be as woke as it possibly could be.

If they stay away from that obvious pitfall, this could be a great show.

This is 100% the OC.

Will gonna sleep in the pool house and have to “bunk with Carlton” whenever Jazz has trouble at home and needs a place to stay. Because there are no other bedrooms available in this BelAire mansion (who designs these homes?!?!)

I want to see more sitcoms reimagined like this. The Office, Cheers, Gligan's Island. The possibilities are endless.

Or maybe come up with new content instead of regurgitating a new woke version of a classic.

This doesn't even look like a comedy at all. So they just decided to take one of the most popular 90s sitcoms, and turn it into what appears to be an hour long full on drama?

What could go wrong here?

Looks great. Hope they can find the humor but the actor playing uncle Phil is legit.

Yalls fear over it being too woke just show your dumb insecurities and how little you remember the original show. Will Smith is executive producing this. It will be passable at worst.

Being too woke is a possibility for everything that is released today.

I think Gunn was playing with the TV trope associated with the show, “Just eat Gilligan”, which implied the rest of the castaways would have been better off if they had killed and eaten him since him fricking up was responsible for them being stuck.

Cheers done like this would be very depressing. Take any of the individual characters' lives and imagine how it would actually play out without funny sitcom writers. I can't think of any of them that wouldn't be sad as hell.

Known Hollywood weirdo James Gunn wanted to reboot Gilligan's Island as a cannibalism survival horror, so little surprises me.

I’d probably watch that.
