I'd say Orlando Bloom...

Got a HUGE boost playing Legolas in LOTR, but that was a cool character (Elf Ninja), and the others cast (John Rhys-Davies, Viggo Mortenson, Ian McKellan, they carried those scenes.

Then he was okay as Will Turner, but Johnny Depp was who made Pirates of the Caribbean such a hit.

Then he was in Troy, where Eric Bana and Brad Pitt made the movie.

Bloom's been IN big movies, but he's never been the man in them.

Great acting is taking a nothing character/terrible script and breathing life into him/her.

Like that stupid movie with Angelina Jolie about being an assassin? He squeezed every ounce out of that role.

There are other examples such as Catch Me if You Can with Tom Hanks, The Departed with several..

I consider Leo an Average Actor. I will give him a nod at the Aviator

I mean he has had stand out performances in movies he carried

the aviator you mentioned
wolf of wall street
the reverent
The Beach
Blood Diamond
Django unchained he was he did better then Christopher Waltz which is hard to do

The movies you mentioned he's up against

Daniel Day Lewis, Tom Hanks, and Jack Nicholson. Three legit contenders for G.O.A.T. actors.

People on here need to go watch Catch Me If You Can again. If anything, Leo is the one carrying the movie (I think that might be his best overall performance). Tom Hanks is the second fiddle in the movie.

Gangs of New York on the other hand - Daniel Day-Lewis is acting circles around everyone in that one. The Departed is an embarrassment of riches in a casting sense. Everyone in that movie was killing it (literally at the end too).

All the younger actors from Game of Thrones that didn't really have work beforehand.

Emma Watson, not a good actress just riding that harry potter fame over 10 years later.

I don't know if he necessarily made it from being "propped up", but the popularity of James Franco has always confused me. He can do his stoner movies, but other than that he's not a terrific actor

I was watching a Leo Dicaprio movie(Gangs of New York) and it occurred to me that this guy hit it big because of the great actors he was fortunate enough to star or co-star with.

You watched Gangs of New York and felt this way about Leo? Why? Because of Daniel Day-Lewis? Titanic made Leo's career dude, who was in that with him?

Now, if you were watching Gangs of New York and felt this way about Cameron Diaz, that I'd understand

He was brilliant as James Dean and he’s been living off that performance for the last 20 years. Unfortunately he hasn’t come close to reaching those highs since.
