Which is why critics gave it a higher score than deserving.
It has the basic silicone base layer of a movie that’s good but audiences dug around underneath all the plastic and found the trashy, ugly bimbo that is The Last Jedi.
But like you said, the critics, and people as a whole, are too much into the superhero fatigue for it to get a great score.

The previous two Russo brothers Marvel films are:
CA: The Winter Soldier - 89% on Rotten Tomatoes
CA: Civil War - 91% on Rotten Tomatoes
1) These were prior to large scale superhero fatigue, which is real. I know some family members that used to keep up, but just don't anymore. They saw everything in Phase 1 and 2, but haven't been interested in Phase 3 at all. I think that's representative of the non-target audience that did go see The Avengers.
2) The Russos were good on small scale film. I think the film will be competently made, that isn't the issue where WS and CW probably had fair shots, the issue is going to be how critics with fatigue approach the films and how they judge it. The small scale of WS really let the film stand on its own. I am always surprised at the CW score and do find it high.

1) Fair point, but rest assured, this movie will bring in casuals. It’s an event that so many are talking about and nearly everyone likely knows someone that is excited about it. They’ll be curious and want to “be in” on the big attraction. It’s a cultural phenomenon at this point like Star Wars.
In addition, Black Panther brought in a whole different non target audience. Some, many even, of those are going to see this too since BP and Wakanda are highlighted in the marketing so much to have a huge role. That’s not by accident I’m sure.
2) Civil War is in no way small scale. It’s basically Avengers 2.5. Has everyone from AoU minus Thor and Hulk (admitedly huge characters) but adds in Ant-Man, Black Panther, and Spider-Man (arguably THE Marvel a-lister for decades before the MCU brought others to that level). It too was very much an event film and did a great job balancing everyone. This is why I have much more faith in the Russos directing IW than say if Whedon was.

I don't disagree here, but success doesn't necessarily equal high ratings either.

I agree. Letting the Russos run things has been huge for the MCU. I hope they enjoy it, even if they do something smaller next, because they have surpassed Whedon imo at setting the appropriate tone. Avengers set the stage well but CW cemented and perfected the formula. I hope IW falls in line with that.

whoever said Age of Ultron had no stakes is incorrect. it may not have had stakes at the time necessarily, but that is where the avengers began to break, which was completed in Civil War.
Stark creating Ultron to save the world from the bigger threat and having it blow up in his face started the fissures in the team that became a full on collapse in Civil War. AoU is far better now than it was at the time.

Oh of course not. Countless examples have proven that. I think we are also all aware at this point, even more so after TLJ, that audience score is a better indicator to the average movie goer than critic score.
I think one of the most impressive things about the MCU is the quality of films, especially in phase 3, is done well in such a way to cater towards both critics and audiences as evidenced by high ratings with both. It’s a difficult feat for any single film, much less a franchise of this magnitude to keep repeating.

Very well said. I’d gladly welcome them back to the MCU if they ever wanted to do another after A4

They just said they want to do more...and my guess would be they want the X-Men.

If they did in fact say this then I would hand it to them on a silver platter and let them create it in their vision.

it had ramifications going forward but the tension was kind of cut out of the film knowing the team was going to survive because the big bad teased at the end of the first was still looming....in an announced 2 part film.
could have been better if Ultron was as good of a villain as the trailers let on

Interesting...could this board handle another TLJ reaction?

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR is going to make a certain number of fans happy, and piss a whole bunch of people off. Expect a Last Jedi-style backlash for this one.

I actually just saw TLJ. I'm not a star wars fan boy, but I've seen all but some of the prequels. Watched the first prequel, quit half way through the second and have just seen bits and pieces of the 3rd on a movie channel.
I would say I'm a casual star wars fan and I really enjoyed TLJ. Thought it was a solid entertaining and fun movie. I would guess most people feel the same.

This reads like people will be upset at how many people are killed, which wasn't TLJ's problem. I don't think there's anything IW could do that would equal Luke's Death, Super-Leia, or Pointless Casino Planet Romp.
And given the track record, Feige has not shown a tendency of crapping all over history except for maybe the Mandarin.
Which means Thor, Cap and IM are all dead

Whoever wrote that review is an idiot. It's Empire Strikes Back quality.

I can’t possibly believe it could be anywhere close to TLJ. I at least appreciate the ambition of this project, when there’s nothing I respect about TLJ.
Plus the Russos are directing it and have the benefit of the doubt going in. It may not be a masterpiece, but I’m expecting some blend of Civil War and Guardians of the Galaxy. I may nitpick, but I doubt I’ll be pissed at this movie as a whole.

I’m thinking they’ll absorb Thor into the next Guardians of the Galaxy, but I do think the Cap is a dead man walking. This has to be his swan song.

I predict it will be the next “best superhero movie since The Dark Knight” until the next “best superhero movie since The Dark Knight.”

I'm extremely casual when it comes to SW and I thought that movie sucked. The SJW stuff didn't bother me, just didn't think it was a good movie. Felt choppy, a lot of things just made no sense....but probably best not to go down that road and hijack this thread

Really? That’s interesting. I’ve yet to see a reaction quite like that one.
I’ve already had a major disappointment in TLJ. I can’t take another one of those

Still don't really understand that move. In any case though, I don't think we're getting any more Iron Man films anyway, so the hopes of a real Mandarin coming from shadows are probably for naught.
It's looking like they're going to keep going in the cosmic direction.
I kind of want to see more one off stories from different characters. I don't know what Phase 4 could bring anyway in terms of giant crossovers like they've done with the infinity stones.

and if we're talking death backlash, comparing the two isn't apples to apples
from what I've gathered, most either didn't expect that character to die or just didn't care for how he died
IW I think most are expecting death....shite some seem to think its an absolute must.
