AT&T executive-turned-head of Warner Media John Stankey spoke at a town hall in New York and addressed the changes to come for HBO after the $85.4 billion merger between AT&T and Time Warner.

...Stankey said he wanted HBO to increase subscribers and the number of hours viewers watch shows as well as churn out more content — much like their streaming brethren.

“We need hours a day,” he said. “It’s not hours a week, and it’s not hours a month. We need hours a day. You are competing with devices that sit in people’s hands that capture their attention every 15 minutes.”

...Plepler mentions that HBO was profitable and Stankey said that it’s “just not enough.”

They do talk about stepping up investment to achieve this growth, but a big part of HBO's success has been their niche focus. They already have enough meh shows that they don't need to water things down anymore.

prob see more 15-30 minute shows and I wouldn't be shocked if they started creating and releasing series all at once like Netflix

They're gonna have to drop the price or add a lot more shows if they want to be like netflix and amazon.

Hmmm I'll take the quality of quantity. Especially when it comes to a premium channel like HBO.

But AT&T is thinking people will chose AT&T internet and wireless service because you get HBO for $5 and it's $15 everywhere else. The more data people use watching HBO the more of a benefit they gain from AT&T content not counting towards their AT&T data caps.

This should be the way of the future, and any company not doing it should be left behind.

The model of the weekly tv show has been antiquated by binging.

I’m pessimistic as well. Hope it doesn’t effect GOT.

my friend was in the room during that speech. He said its much more positive than its being made out to be. They have some smart guys running things, it will be fine.

Finished filming, so we are safe. Now the spinoffs are a different story.

True, but I hope they don’t try to air the final season all at once (or worse, the idea of 20 minute episodes that was floated a while ago).

We’re good there IMO since they just wrapped up. And I think even with the spinoffs they won’t want to frick with their cash cow too much.

I would like to see HBO do more mini/short series like they are with shows like Sharp Objects. Bring in quality cast (some high profiled). Those were almost always some of my favorite HBO creations over the years.

Seeing what Disney has done with Star Wars (especially the spin offs) is all the more reason to suspect they’d tread lightly dealing with GOT content.

Am I the only one who hates this?

I love how we still have to wait a week between episodes of GoT and what not.

The first show I vividly remember releasing as whole seasons on Netflix that my friends watched as well was House of Cards and you get a group text going and everything gets spoiled because you didn’t spend 12 hours on a weekend in front of the dumbass tv.
