Finished Season 9 last night.

Rebecca Howe Cheers >>>>>> Diane Chambers Cheers. Last 4 seasons have been excellent

Diane's character was annoying. Once she left I feel like the whole ensemble cast all got to flesh themselves out instead of most episodes revolving around annoying SJW Diane and her attempts to cut Sam's balls off.

Sam is a much better character minus Diane.

Plus we get to see more Lilith and Frasier who are an awesome couple from a TV standpoint. I love all their scenes.

Woody is always great too.

I like Rebecca's aloofness and her relationship with Robin. She doesn't act like she is a perfect flawless woman like Diane did. She admits her faults and is OK with it anyway.

The show changed and folks don't like change. Personally, I liked Diane's dynamic with the other bar patrons and her dueling with Carla was great. Long also did a fantastic job with the character.

On the other hand, though, folks who hate on Alley's Rebecca are misguided. While I, personally, think the writing got a little worn out (and that was happening before the cast change) - it did open up some new possibilities - the Sam/Diane story going away let the other characters have more breathing room. In particular the growth of Frasier and Woody during the Rebecca seasons.

Obviously, most folks will like and gravitate to Rebecca (as opposed to Diane who was pretentious and relatively unlovable), but there was less conflict, so they had to externalize conflict more and more during the final seasons.

And I say this as someone who thought Cheers was the finest comedy on the air during that run - and Fraiser Crane was my favorite character on television from the time he showed up at Cheers until Newsradio started (then it was close between Frasier and Hartman's Bill McNeal).

I hated what they did to Sam after Diane left and Rebecca came in. I did like seeing more stories involving the other characters such as Woody, Norm, Frasier, and Norm.

I like Frasier better, but I still don't understand how his character changed so much outside of Boston being a social experiment.

I preferred the show while Diane was a part of the cast, but I still enjoyed it afterwards.

I rewatched Cheers a couple of years ago and really discovered how funny Ted Danson was on the show.

He's also great on Curb.

I loved both Diane and Rebecca episodes!

Fraiser was my favorite character, and the show Fraiser is still my favorite show.

Maybe you aren't smart enough to know it got worse. Cheers Season 5 is one of the best seasons for any show ever.

Shelly is 10x better actress than Kirstie Alley.

There has never been any other major character who was as annoying and whiny as Rebecca Howe.

Diane was a whiney gold digger as well. I give Rebecca the edge due to hotness. She was sexy back then.

Nah, Diane was a pretentious snob. Rebecca's stated goal was to only date men who could advance her career.

And FTR, Diane >>>>>>>>>> Rebecca.

Fraiser is easily the best character

My favorite Frasier scenes are when the other characters are up to shenanigans and he acts like he is above whatever they are doing, but then finds a way to justify himself getting in on the action anyway

The karoeke machine episodes may have been my favorite Frasier moment so far. I was rolling when Norm and Cliff started singing Lollipop for the 2nd time and Frasier went over there to lose his shite at them

No, in the pilot Diane was running off with her boss. She ended up waitressing at Cheers ecause the boss left and she was destitute. She is like an OT baller on here. She is not as good as she thinks she is.

Sumner Sloan was her professor, and I think she was his assistant at the time he dumped her. I don't think there's any reason to believe she pursued him like Rebecca did Drake and Colcord. Diane also fell for her shrink, Frasier. She seems prone to falling for men who hold a position of power over her. There was also Sam's brother, but he could sweep any woman off her feet.

Right, she's a pretentious snob, like I said. She's not a golddigger like Rebecca, who knows she's a loser and sees a successful man as her way out of it. Diane was far too in love with herself to ever see herself clearly.

Sam was dumbed down quite a bit after Diane left. I always hated that.

This might sound weird, but rewatching Cheers seems depressing to me. It originally aired when I was a kid, and my parents would laugh at the jokes but I was too young to understand them. The show, the bar, and especially the opening song with the piano remind me of laying in bed with my parents, not comprehending the show but happy that my parents were happy.
