The show definitely took a hit when Diane left, but they adjusted fairly quickly. Even as an altered series it was a classic. Keeping Frasier as an ongoing character eventually made up for the Diane exodus.

I go back and forth. I like the latter seasons because it became more of an ensemble show, and the ensemble is one of the best ever in TV history. It's just a perfect assembly of talent and characters. Everything clicked. The bar itself became more of a character, and the show smartly pivoted from being about Sam with a bunch of B-plots to making it a show about the bar, in which any character could have the A-plot that week.

That said, Sam and Diane was perfect and they had awesome chemistry. Also, the show was great at calling both characters out on their bullshite. Cheers is a show about failure, but Sam and Diane could never quite identify as life's losers in the way that Norm or Frasier could. So it had a better central premise in the early days, plus... Coach. But he died in S2 or S3, so Woody came in earlier than people remember.

If you look at his ex-wives, he's never really gone for the traditional hot Hollywood types. Steenburgen is the hottest woman that he's had a long term deal with.

By the way, how do you think his wife felt when she found out he was cheating on her with Whoopi?

I think it was better bc the switch allowed the main crew of Frasier, Woody, Cliff, and Norm more time on screen. Frasier just kept getting better as the show went along (hence his spinoff which was also great). Plus the addition of Lilith (who I thought was outstanding) and Robin really were great additions to the show.

I liked Diane better than Rebecca but I thought Rebecca was good.

I rewatched Cheers a couple of years ago and really discovered how funny Ted Danson was on the show.

He's also great on Curb.

He's just a tremendous comedic actor. He was great in "Bored to Death", this shaggy dog HBO show with Jason Schwartzman as a novelist turned unlicensed private investigator.
He's also really good in "The Good Place" that NBC show with Kristen Bell and this Indian woman who may be the most beautiful woman on earth.

Finished Season 9 last night.

Rebecca Howe Cheers >>>>>> Diane Chambers Cheers. Last 4 seasons have been excellent
Correct. I have always maintained that the show really hit its stride in Rebecca's second season. Woody is better than coach. And Frasier and Lilith are treasures. Sheesh - the final 3 seasons, virtually EVERY episode is a classic.

I loved Cheers and I enjoyed Harry Anderson's street hustler character.

Harry was a SF street performer who was a friend of mine.

He performed magic on the street but he made his real money ripping tourists off by playing Three Card Monte with them.

One morning I was walking down Beach street and I saw Harry sitting on a low wall at a bus stop right across from the BV and I noticed he was drinking a big bottle of Jack Daniels.

I walked up to him and said, "Hi Harry, how's it going?"

He looked up and me and said, "Horrible. Last night I got the shite beat out of me by a guy who lost a bunch of money playing Three Card Monte."

Harry went on to say, "I'm leaving SF and going to Hollywood as soon as the next bus comes after I finish this bottle of JD."

I said to him, "Well, since that is the case then I'll help you finish the bottle so you can leave San Francisco on the next bus."

I sat down next to him and we passed the bottle of JD back and forth to each other until it was finished.

When the next bus came, Harry jumped up and we shook hands while I wished him good luck.

As the bus left, Harry gave me a final wave goodbye through the window and that was the last time I saw him until a few months later when I turned my TV on and the Merv Griffin show was on.

My jaw dropped when I noticed that Merv was talking to my friend, Harry Anderson.

The moral of this story is when you see a friend drinking a bottle of Jack Daniels then always do them a favor and help them finish it.

Ted Danson is a huge lib, wouldn't be surprised if he did it or his handlers had him do it so he could gain progressive diversity cred.

Sam became a WUSS after Diane left.

Frasier and Woody kept the show alive.

End of story.

I'm of the opinion that the show got worse AND Diane needed to leave. They were running out of storylines for her and the Sam and Diane storyline had run its course. It was also well-known that Shelley Long was difficult to work with and the other cast members hated her. During her final season, it seemed like her only purpose was to be used as a punching bag for the other characters to make fun of. Cheers almost certainly would have ended earlier than it did if Long never left the show.

The funny thing about Harry Anderson playing the role of a Three Card Monte street hustler was that he didn't have to act the part.

That's how Harry was in real life.

BTW, some of my favorite episodes of Cheers are when they competed against the other local bar but always lost.

Anyone who calls someone an idiot based on something objective is an idiot.

I think you meant

Anyone who calls someone an idiot based on something subjective is an idiot.

Objective - Observation of measurable facts
Subjective - Personal opinions, assumptions, interpretations and beliefs
