Am I just getting old or are lots of shows very dark (screen dark) now

Not sure why, but i have noticed the last few shows I have watched, most only on apple TV that several scenes are almost pitch black, you can barely see anything. Is this just me, or others notice it too?
Ted Lasso had some dark scenes. I know some are filmed at night, but you almost can't see anything. Pluribus and Widows Bay as well.
Is it just me? I did try to adjust my TV, which if 5 years old to like "movie" from standard, and that helped a little.

Dark is a crazy show, if you figure it out with out multiple watches you are better than me at it.

I've noticed it. I've also noticed how much dialogue has been dumbed down and even plot lines to an extent.

It’s been a trend for several years to try and use only natural light to light a scene. The end of GoT and most of HOTD suffers from this too. There is one scene in season 1 of HOTD that happens outside in the sun and somehow it is still dark. It’s a silly choice that needs to end soon.
Reminds me of the quote from the LOTR cinematographer Andrew Lesnie. They were filming a night scene and Sean Astin asked where the light was coming from. Lesnie responded “Same place as the music”.

I currently have Lawman Bass Reeves up on my other monitor and was thinking just the same thing an hour ago. I can barely see shite in the indoor and nighttime scenes, and that's not a racism thing.

I've been watching lots of B movies from the 80s and 90s and there are plenty of them where I can barely tell what's going on due to poor lighting

It’s been used to cover up poor VFX and bad CGI as well.

it’s a combination of tech allowing more low light filming while not everyone’s TV having the right settings.

You need to calibrate your tv. You can do it for free from Youtube.

I guess the days of Cinemascope and Technicolor are gone. I think the darkness may help them hide CGI.

Not sure it is new. Nothing drives me crazier than movies / tv shows where you can't see anything even though lights are on.

Black levels have been the Achilles heel of LED HDTVs but they've finally sorted that out after 2 decades of gradual improvements.

I often feel the same way. I am getting TOO OLD!
