Aladdin Early Reactions Are Surprisingly Positive
quote:

@ADLeadbeater
Surprise, #Aladdin is fairly good. Mainly because it nails the characters. Massoud/Scott's chemistry is top, Smith's cocky/emotional sides make Genie mostly fresh. Those three (and high-energy songs) help pull up the story, which is usual Disney remake approach (expand and "fix")

@roarEcashin
Can confirm that the majority of your concerns about #Aladdin, especially anything Will Smith-related, will vanish once that first big song kicks in, but my pick for MVP has got to be @BillyMagnussen! He might just be a comedy genius in waiting.

#Aladdin Thoughts: A lavish and enjoyable retelling, but not enough of A Whole New World to fully succeed. Mena Massoud/Naomi Scott are great, while Will Smith brings a fun energy to his take on the Genie, even if the CGI lets him down. The less said about Jafar, the better

@EthanRunt
So #Aladdin is Disney's second-best recent remake, after Pete's Dragon. Proudly a musical fantasy adventure, the jokes are strong, Smith's Genie is a lot of fun, the human leads work well. It's 20 minutes too long, but works a charm for the entire run. Will Smith credits rap!!!

quote:

@JoePassmore
My expectations were in the gutter, but #Aladdin was so much more fun than it had the right to be. The two leads were great and the visuals were amazing. Much better than Dumbo.

@hannahwalesy
I had the lowest of expectations going into #Aladdin but you know what? I actually quite liked it! It's not perfect by any means but I'm pleasantly surprised.

@HannaFlint
The issues really are technical and I noticed them more this time. Too many cuts and bad framing so I stand by that Guy Ritchie should not have directed this movie.

Does it still have Sexy Jasmine when Jafar becomes Sultan?

These first reactions are always misleading and or unreliable.

This movie is not going to be good.

Watched the Prince Ali song on YouTube and I've gotta say, Will Smith actually did a really good job

No. They are not always misleading. Most films will have a first reaction tweet that will mirror your opinion after seeing the film. But it's easier just to dismiss anything that doesn't fit your preconceived notion.

This is about what I am expecting. I actually like Will Smith, so I'm sure his genie won't bother me too badly...but I suspect it may look ridiculous in live action. And although I only have seen the trailers, Jafar looks like the weakest part by far.

While these are promising, I don’t trust Disney when it comes to the critics ratings. Pretty sure there’s some sort of quid pro quo going on there. I’ll wait to see the audience score on RT before getting too excited

This. I don't know what to make of the new Aladdin or any of these types of remakes. Beauty and the Beast did a near shot by shot remake of the animated version and it wasn't nearly as good. I can't put my finger on it other than it just doesn't seem to work in non-animated form.

Maybe Aladdin will be different, maybe it won't.. but I very much recall there being a thread on this board where a TLJ critic openly admitted that professional critics deliberately gave TLJ a good review because they didn't want to be blackballed from other Disney projects. Wish I could find it somewhere.

Is that why Dumbo ratings were so low?

Rotten tomatoes will give it a great score just because of the cast.

But, I really hope that it is good.

THey had to sacrifice something to make it look more "in line."

Will Smith is terrible and Disney ratings are bought and paid for.

I asked in another thread but didn't get an answer, is there a reason why will smith is sometimes normal looking but other times is blue?

Critics are all bought and paid for these days. The industry is a sham.

I have a hard time convincing myself to see these live action remakes of the animated movies. Just seems weird.

I'm looking forward to the movie and think it will be quite enjoyable. I've never been all that worried about Smith as the Genie, my argument has always been if you expect ANYONE to go in and rival Williams then you'll leave disappointed.

Jafar on the other hand.

The genie in the cartoon sometimes looked normal too.
