The American Film Institute released in February 2005 there list of the 100 greatest movie quotes of all-time. The #1 quote was given by Rhett Butler in 1939's Gone With the Wind: "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." And the most recent film to have a quote on that list was from 2002's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers ("My precious.").

My question is, if we were to update this list to the present day, what movie quotes do you think would make it? I have a few nominees:

"I wish I knew how to quit you." - Brokeback Mountain (2005)
"This is Sparta!" - 300 (2006)
"I drink your milkshake!" - There Will be Blood (2007)
"I am Iron Man." - Iron Man (2008)
"Why so serious?" - The Dark Knight (2008)

quote:

"I am Iron Man." - Iron Man (2008)

I would say that same quote from Endgame would be much more fitting.

To be honest, I’m not sure that any of those really merit being on the list if they expanded it to say, 125 for 125 years.

Ironically, the only one I’d instantly identify with the movie is the Brokeback one, and that’s the only one of the five movies I haven’t seen. I guess the younger generation would also say “I am iron man” though many of us older folks probably think of the song first when we hear it.

As someone else mentioned “I am the captain now” would be a good choice.

A few others I’d mention:

“get off my lawn” - just because of the way it has entered the lexicon, should be on there.

“I have a particular set of skills” - the quote is so emblematic of the movie, and significant as it spawned three true sequels plus a slew of other Liam Neeson revenge/thriller/action flicks

“May the odds be ever in your favor” - another case where I’d say that even people who haven’t seen the movie are familiar with the quote. The “volunteer as tribute” might also work its way in.

“I’m tired of these MF’in snakes on this MF’in plane” - enuff said

“But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes” - I’m not sure if it’s this quote from Idiocracy, but the movie is so quotable.

You can probably throw old school (you’re my boy blue) and anchor man in there too for quotes that are regularly used and have become significant.

Also, without going back to the list, there could be some in the 95-2002 time period which didn’t qualify then but have become significant. Without looking, I can think of “that’s just like, your opinion man”, “the dude abides” and a few other Big Lebowski quotes.

IMO Endgame’s quote would be “Avengers….Assemble”

Here is the link on Wikipedia.

The list is a little suspect IMO as “I am your father” from Empire Strikes back isn’t on there.

I remember watching this when it first aired and kept waiting for that. I was stunned that it didn’t make the list.

"In another life I would've really enjoyed just doing laundry and taxes with you."

It's not punchy but that line broke me.

I went back and read through the list, and it has some other oddities and omissions.

Just an example, from Animal House it has “Toga, Toga”. I’d argue that “Fat, Drunk and Stupid is no way to go through life” is a far more memorable and significant quote from that movie.

I don’t hear anyone quoting that part of Animal House either. Honestly every quote from Wormer in that scene you reference is more memorable than that quote.
