I'll Sam Kinison, Andrew Dice Clay, Steve Martin, Bobcat Goldwait (sp?), and Sinbad to the list of discussion..

Although I'm liking Carlin, Pryor, and Murphy at the top of the list

A twisted genius. Saw an interview of him not long ago. Getting along in years but strangely funny.

great list. i would add brian regan, jay mohr, dave attel, buddy hackett, don rickles (although he's not really my thing), woody allen, rodney dangerfield, bob newhart (once again i have to be in a mood to enjoy him).

Good additions, though i'm not a big Mohr fan (though I love his Walken bits). Can't believe I forgot Mitch Hedberg and Lewis Black. Newhart is really a one-album wonder, but I think its the last comedy album to go #1 (don't hold me to that). So he belongs on the list. God, I love Dave Attel. I thought about putting him on the list and balked.

For women comics, I'd add Maria Bamford and Kathleen Madigan. Also, I'm not sure if he qualifies, but Stephen Lynch is funny as hell.

Yeah, i'm trying to base this solely off standup. nothing else. Murphy was a better comic actor than a standup, which inflates his reputation a bit. He's still top 20 for sure, but I don't think his standup is top 5. Carlin and Hicks couldn't act for shite. They were standups.

It's like Mitch Hedberg's bit about "can you farm?"

i will be in Big D!

i only didn't add hedberg because i thought for sure he was already there.

but yeah whoever said you can't have hedberg without stephen wright was correct.

i agree with the females you listed and would add amy schumer as my current fave.

if you like lynch check out bo burnham. i think he's genius waiting to happen.

i wouldn't put murphy in the top 5 all time but i find it hard to say he was a better actor than standup. i will say that his standup outside of delirious and raw pale in comparison, but those two albums were sick.

can you farm? good stuff.

People sometimes forget how good Steve Martin was at standup. He's in my top 10.

Sure he's goofy and schticky at times, but he's and art-for-art's sake kind of guy... what looks to be goofy and schticky isn't what it always appears to be, and much of what he says and does is over the audience's head.

mohr rubs a lot of people the wrong way. he can be self depricating one second and think he's the funniest person in the world the next. he takes shots at other comics and steps on toes.

his impressions are golden though. his tracy morgan is dead on.

I'm a little biased because all of my friends and I quote this act routinely, but Dave Chappelle's Killing Them Softly stand-up show is money! I wouldn't consider him a top 5 stand up comedian ever (top 20 maybe), but this one show is my favorite stand up routine ever, hands down.

Huge Carlin fan too!! He is #1 as far as all time stand up comedians, IMO

Same here except I would actually put him in the top 10.

I don't have tickets, but I think I'll find some. Even if I don't, I certainly am in for a tailgate.

Murphy was a brilliant comic actor in his early years -- Trading Spaces, 48 Hours, Beverly Hills Cop... that's quite a run. He owned the big screen before sliding into his current sad state of fat suits and poop jokes.

Chappelle is a good call, but a short yet brillaint career. He's a comet, but he's done nothing for about a decade now.

Neither should this.

Alway loved Carlin but thought Pryor and Murphy were overrated.

It's a shame that Mitch Hedberg is gone.

I've been watching a lot of John Caparullo lately. Dude's timing and delivery are money.

i like cap, he's a good one.

as far as dice goes i was one of those guys in like 7th grade that knew every word to all his bits.

but looking back on it, for lack of a better comparison he was like the KISS of the comedy world.

Caparullo and Patton Oswalt are probably my two favorites right now.

I may have missed it, but I think Foxworthy at least deserves a mention.

He's not my favorite, but he was pretty damn popular and wasn't bad before he just started regurgitating old jokes over and over again.
