That's a pretty good analogy. His act was complete shock and awe but he was extremely good at it.

I'm always sad to see Dennis Miller omitted from these discussions.

Please do not allow the hipster anarchists to put Hicks on this list.

Terribly overrated.

He has always been pretty consistently entertaining over everything he's done. Yes that includes MNF. Don't see how Gruden get's love on that but Miller didn't.

I highly, highly recommend Jay Mohr's 2nd podcast w/ Tom Segura "Black People at the Beach" on Kevin Smith's Smodcast. Hysterical.

Also one of my favorite bits of all time is Chris Rock's Columbine rant.

"fricking trench coat mafia. 'Nobody likes us, boohoo we got no friends.' shite I seen their yearbook, there were 6 of them mother frickers. 6 of 'em!!

I ain't have 6 friends in high school, hell I ain't have 6 friends now! shite, thats 3 on 3 with a halfcourt."

If you're looking to Hicks for political philosophy, you deserve what you get. We are talking about a guy whose belief system is structutred on getting abducted by a UFO.

That said, Hicks was great at deconstructing language, second only to Carlin in that regard. He was just terrific at pointing out the absurdity of things, propped up by language. He was really quite funny. So funny that Denis Leary could make a career out of ripping off his act (not entirely fair, as Leary eventually found his own material). But there is the old comedians' joke: Why is Denis Leary famous? Because there is no cure for cancer.

i listened to the 1st one with his manager. i need to listen to the 2nd one.

rock has some other level bits and this is one of them. the balls it took also to do the "differences btwn black people and N-words (sorry i'm crippled by PC-ness on the internet) in my mind is legendary.

Chappelle is a good call, but a short yet brillaint career. He's a comet, but he's done nothing for about a decade now.

No taped specials or anything, but he still does standup.

His problem is he went crazy at the height of his career.

dave chappelle turned down the role of Bubba in Forrest Gump because he thought it wouldn't be successful

DC in 1993 had no business turning down any hollywood offer

For about 20 minutes of his first taped special he did the whole "black people do this, white people do that" routine. The rest is just observational comedy from a black perspective. If Dave was just a black/white comedian, he would have never become so popular. There are a million of those around.

Chappelle having fun at the expense of def comedy jam.

Dave Chappelle in 1993 is not capable off pulling of any serious acting job.
