Would it be better to make ohtani a reliever?

That was nasty the other night when he closed wbc
That might be less taxing than starting and expecting him to go deep into games

Ohtani probably is the one who decides what Ohtani gets to do but I think you’re correct in using him that way personally

My guess is he will be making north of 60 million a year next season whatever he decides to do.

He may move to the pen, likely as a closer, at some point. I think that at this point in his career, he’s still too valuable as a starter to do that.

I always thought the 2 way player model made more sense for longevity for the pitching side to be in relief as a closer and I think he'd be wicked as a closer. But as long as he's dominating and staying healthy there's no reason to pull him off starting.

Incredible that the Angels have two incredibly dominant players yet will struggle to make the postseason.

As long as his arm is healthy, he should keep starting, especially with the Ohtani rule allowing him to renain at DH in his starts.
130.1 IP in 2021 and 166 IP in 2022... that's far more valuable than the innings he would pick up as a reliever.

This. He’ll stay a starter for a few more seasons for sure before moving to a reliever or closer role. But he’s an XFactor as a starter

Angels have beeen using a 6 man rotation and he only averaged 5.9 innings/start last year. He is arguably one of the least taxed 1-2 arms
Tyler Anderson helps but their rotation is blah and their offense is bad. Unless those change or he starts to wither, it wouldn’t make sense to give him the ball late and more consistently behind when you can just start him and be behind less every 5-6 days

If the Angels have 5 somewhat reliable starters without him then yes, have him close. I doubt they even have three though.

He does that when he starts too

Astros have the AL West’s, if not the AL’s Balls in the Vicegrip.

He added 6.2 WAR of value as a SP last year.
Edwin Diaz led MLB in WAR for relievers with 3.0. Mariano Rivera's best WAR season ever was 5.0.
You leave him at SP

Only way it would make sense is if the wear and tear of being a starter begins to grind him down and it’s better health wise. It’s super awkward though warming him up while he’s in the game as a hitter if you noticed during the game the other night, so you might not be able to pick your spot as well with leverage as a reliever.

Either way he will eventually probably have to become a full time hitter once he gets into his early to mid 30s

While you may be right, I'd hesitate to apply common wisdom to the unicorn that doesn't follow any baseball orthodoxy.

Already looking forward to when he pimps a go ahead homer in the bottom of the 8th, and then turns around and tosses 12-15 pitches to get the save in the 9th
He is God's gift to baseball

I just hope that however he ends up being used on the mound, he's wearing the True Blue Pinstripes of the Chicago Cubs when he does it.
