Guardians is terrible.

Also has a much better alternative (Spiders).

I was fine with the Washington Football Team. It was old school and stoic, apropos for a club that had just sacrificed its brand at the altar of social justice. That said, the Commanders works fine - there is at least some rational antecedent for the region.

Now, as for the Guardians, please tell me they didn't just pluck that name from a temporal movie franchise (a la the Raptors) and there is some reason Cleveland should actually be associated with guarding something?

And good for the Braves for holding out....

Cleveland should've chosen the Steamers.

In reality, if we are talking unique, Cleveland should've chosen the Rockers or Spiders.

Washington should've chosen the Sentinels.

Both would've been different.

Both are real bad. I would have much rather preferred just Washington Football Team and Cleveland Baseball Club, put a European style twist on the names. If a mascot isn't uniquely tied to your team or city in pro sports I don't think that it's really necessary.

I agree with all this

’d say the opposite. At least Guardians ends in dians, so the fans still wearing Indians jerseys, blends in a little.

I also think that this played a part in the selection of this name. When you see the jerseys from different angles, the script and the end of the word is reminiscent of the classic "Indians" logo.

This is not to say that I like the change or that the bridge statue "guardians" had any real significance in Cleveland culture prior to the change. Sort of like the crossed pistols on the Lake Charles I-10 bridge...some have an awareness that they are there and its a cool throwback to a different time, but many don't even notice their existence. Seems a stretch to make them a major sport mascot.

Are we going to say the Commanders won the Super Bowl in 1991? Or that Mark Mosely of the Commanders is the only kicker to win MVP?

Yes. 100% this is what will happen.

Correct. In this new, "Progressive" America, ALL history is rewritten to fit the clown world dogma.

It isn't just our founding history that has to be rewritten, it is an all-encompassing effort.

They’re both shitty. Madden and MLB The Show have better generic team names when you relocate a franchise

Commanders isn't terrible but it is not very inspired. Guardians is just awful.

Both sound like names for spring football league teams.

Guardians, easily.

Commanders is somewhat fitting for DC as they would love to command each and every one of us.

They're both disgustingly brutal. But at least with Commanders, I can shorten it to "Commies" and amuse myself.

Commanders because how can the entire team be a leadership role.

If entire team are guardians than whom are they guarding?

Guardians. Just for the origin of the usage. I first heard the name guardians and thought....ok cool .. There must be some statue or something overlooking the lake... As in guardians of the lake/seafarers. ( Like Wichita has "keeper of the plains").. But no the Cleveland guardian is something overlooking traffic on a bridge

bullshite

They should have NEVER bent the knee and kept their name like it was

The name changing thing is beyond absurd. If I were a fan of these teams I’d serially considering giving it all up. It is, and always will be, bullshite

They wanted to stay the Washington Football Team, the patent/trademark office suit they had denied their clam to trademark Washington Football Team, so any future merchandise wouldn’t have an official license. It was either stay the untrademark WFT or switch to a trademark name, they chose money and became the Commies

Guardians is much worse.

Commanders is so bad it’s funny. We can just call them the Washington Commies, and it works.

Guardians is just sad.
