Will superteams become a recurring problem in CFB?

NIL has really changed recruiting, but imo the portal and 1 free transfer packed the most punch.

Will we see in the years to come, multiple big name players from top universities all transfer to one school to get a trophy before going to the NFL?

What’s to stop them? Any big or small school would welcome it and even throw huge money at them via NIL to come.

I know there’s a lot more at play in CFB (signing limits etc). It only takes one year to set a precedent and then the kids will think it’s cool to do so. And with grey shirt/walk-on loopholes coupled with NIL, scholarships aren’t a necessity anymore.

Only 2-3 teams have a chance at a championship each year, so how worse could it get?

Is that really worse than Bama, Ohio State and Clemson being in the playoff repeatedly?

Yes. Eli Ricks, a cornerback on an okay team at a top 20 program (LSU) realized he could do a little better by joining a great team at a top 3 program (Bama).

If this guy is okay casually jumping to his team's bitter rival after two years of competition just for a slight upgrade, the mid level and smaller guys don't have a chance at keeping talent.

The irony of the NIL and transfer rules is that they should give the mid level schools a better chance to compete with the elites, but in reality it’s going to widen the gap.

Just wait till players see how a move like this ends up showing the players true colors and hurts their NFL draft stock

NIL won't kill college football like people think but there will be a learning curve

Things that should hurt draft stock (Kenny Pickett bailing on Pitt's biggest bowl game since 1982, for example) haven't been. This won't either.

I can't imagine the current free for all lasting much longer.

Hell, UGA had Burton leave us after winning a national title to head to Alabama.

I know he's more likely to shine and get touches in the Alabama system, but it's still absurd to think about the reigning national champ having starters leave for the team they beat for the title.

I suspect that this is what is going to happen too. Some smaller programs may be able to upgrade here and there and score a coup, but the rich will likely just end up getting richer.

...From 1998 to 2020, six teams won 74% of the national championships: Alabama (6), LSU (3), Clemson (2), Florida State (2), Florida (2) and Ohio State (2). Five of the six are not only inside the top 12 nationally in 2019 athletic budgets but also have reeled in the best talent in the nation over the last decade. In a study from MaxPreps, seven college football programs have signed 55% of the five-star prospects from ’11 to ’21. They include LSU, Alabama, Clemson, Florida State and Ohio State, as well as USC and Georgia, the ’21 national champion. ...

That is one thing I have thought about. The diamond in the rough at a small or less prestigious program that was overlooked by the Big Boys out of high school and ends up being 2nd team All-Conference as a sophomore at Vandy or Kansas or someplace is going to get a second chance at a premiere program once he proves his worth. I think this will lead to fewer big upsets. We’re less likely to see Brett Favre leading USM to wins over Bama and Auburn in the same year because he will transfer.

All these kids are mercenaries looking for the best opportunity for themselves - wherever that may be. They would rather be a first round pick from a program they never cared about than a second round pick from their favorite program. Never forget this saying that is almost always true: People are only as loyal as their options.

Players play for themselves, and fans cheer for laundry.

That was a good read; thanks for the link.

With the transfer portal it’s added yet another step in the recruiting process.

You work hard in high school but only get picked up by some big 12 school.

So you put in extra time in the gym and play hard hoping you get noticed for the next round of recruiting. Hit the transfer portal and go to highest bidder
