Why isn't band and cheer part of the LHSAA?

In Texas, band and cheer competitions such as marching band competitions fall under the discretion of the UIL, which is the Texas version of the LHSAA.
In LA, band competitions fall under the LMEA, and there is no statewide cheer association (cheer teams compete under national umbrellas such as NCA and UCA).
Was just wondering if this was typical backwards LA life, or if there was a reason these weren't part of the atlhetic association.

Because this is Louisiana.
Cheer on the Tigers and stop complaining. We will have a festival soon enough.

Because band isn’t a sport, and it’s not nearly as big in LA as TX. Concert band falls under LMEA, and there’s not a state organization for marching. Competitive cheer would make a little more sense

Partially correct... LMEA is weird.
There was a push for a marching band circuit several years back. It gained traction in the bayou and river parishes (they're still doing the same type of shows there), but too many people (Lafayette Music included) wanted the status quo to remain the same...

The UIL governs basically everything with public schools, from debate competitions to literary contests.
It's a much better system.

Well when you live amongst people who are mostly competent, prideful, educated, and want their communities to move forward, then you get things like UIL, and all the other many great things that you get in Texas.

Because then we’d have to split it by select and nonselect

I’m just happy they aren’t involved so that they can’t ruin something else.

Honest question: how many schools on Louisiana have big thriving bands?
In north Louisiana the only one I know of is West Monroe. Every other band seemed very mediocre.

Our local school had a really good band director. He was in the LA Army National Guard band and he got the chance to go full time and be the director. Since then it's been a succession of kids just out of college who stay a year or two and move on. Some years we haven't had a band at all because they weren't able to hire anybody.
Part 2 is that just like sports, band takes time and effort and there are a lot fewer kids willing to put in the work. They'd rather play video games or watch tiktok videos. This mindset is affecting every extracurricular activity.

Correct! There are just as many schools with multiple state championships in band, choir, debate, one act play as there are for the sports & those schools are just as proud.
I coached at Snyder in the 1990s & there was a big sign on US84 saying 24 state championships since 1965 (18 in one act play) & the town was very proud of it.
We were very competitive in sports too when I was there.

Because for better or worse, bands still let morbidly obese clarinet players in their ranks to waddle around and completely destroy the integrity of uniform design…

Central Lafourche has more people in the stands when they do a community show than there is for a football game....of course their football team is 0-9 and awful and the band wins competitions.

That's because its inclusive and can still be competitive. That should be celebrated, not mocked.

I get band. If you think those girls at Live Oak aren’t athletes and what they do isn’t a sport though…They’re one of the best programs in the nation. Absolutely insane the things they do.

Well, waddling around and marching is certainly better than sitting on the couch playing video games. There's the possibility that they will waddle around enough to lose a little weight.

If following the TX model has even a slim possibility of resulting in something like those A&M "yell leaders" I will petition for an actual LAW against it.

Yell leaders represent about 0.000000000350% of the population of Texas.
