They have zero real national championships since 1948. Let’s be real here, that shared one in ‘97 is as legit as that one Southern Cal was given in ‘03. It’s a media trophy that means frick all.
Calling the AP title less legit than the coaches title when the coaches tend to watch watch far less games is laughable.

Until just recently they would routinely beat SEC schools...a few years ago a Harbaugh coached Michigan fricked up Florida on opening day. Alabama got destroyed by a Brady led Michigan in 1999
Michigan benefitted from being in the Detroit market back when Detroit was a dynamic city. Michigan, tOSU and Notre Dame were big time during a time when college football had its greatest growth. Michigan had the biggest stadium. Notre Dame reeled in all the Catholic kids from Chicagoland. TOSU benefited from having kids from the big urban centers and big Country boys from SE Ohio. Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio was where a big percentage of the population was in pre WWII America.
Think about it, Alabama doers not really become a big power until the early 60s.....and even then Notre Dame, Michigan tOSU are still the "powers" It is not until the mid 1970s that Southern schools as a whole begin to become the consistent powers in the game....integration in the SEC and ACC changed the script.

Stubbornness that a coach who took a team to the SB can't win at Michigan.

I’m not sure losing 35-34 in OT qualifies as being “destroyed”.

Similar to Tenn and Nebraska but to a lesser extent, college football has passed Michigan by and for whatever reason they cant recruit like Ohio St

Outside of that screwjob in 02, Ohio State was in the same boat since Michigan from the 70s until Urban. He helped them recruit in the South and now look at where they are.

You Bama fricks are nit picky. Brady owned you guys that game. The point is that it is not until Southern schools broke the color barrier that they became consistently what we look at as elite and that does not really start to be felt until the late 1970's.The list of National Champions bares this out. Up until the early 80's the only team that would rise that high somewhat consistantly was Alabama
Every now and then you might get al LSU or Tennessee slip in, but from 1945 to about 1978 the teams of the midwest dominated paricularly Notre Dame. But if you pay attention the swath from Syracuse to Chicago north of the Ohio produced the power. In the mid 60's USC pops up
What did most of those teams do that created their success? Integration. Something that doesn't start in the South until Bryant....influenced by McKay at USC starts in the rarly 1970's.

Someone doesn’t know their history at all. Southeastern universities have been national championships on a consistent basis since the beginning of the 20th century. The rise of the 3 Florida schools in the 80s along with a booming economy across the South in general made the Midwest an afterthought on the field in college football. Since 1980, the 3 Florida schools and Bama each have won more national championships than the Pac 12, Big Ten and Notre Dame COMBINED.
To say the Southern schools emerged in the 70s is false. Dominance started to get asserted.

The Coaches Trophy never carried the weight as the AP Trophy because of that - normal people realized coaches were far too busy coaching their own teams and often just voted for their coaching buddy teams.
But if you cover a sport for a living and write articles about it, it's sort of assumed you have watched some games.

And going to journalism school and watching some games gives you what qualifications to determine who the best college football team is exactly?
I’ll take the coaches poll all day everyday. Biases balance out. The media has its agendas and is far more prone to groupthink and overreaction.

I like to make fun of Harbaugh for having Asperger’s and think it would be funny if he bombs out and ends up OC for the Jaguars.
But I don’t know who Michigan could get that would be better. He’s just a bit overpaid. And he’s one home run recruit or smart coaching hire away from beating OSU/making noise in the playoffs. If O could land Joe Burrow and Joe Brady, you don’t think Harbaugh is also capable?

Because they watched the games, unlike the Coaches.
That's more qualification than busy arse coaches who only watched tape of their upcoming opponent.
The Coaches Poll sounded like a poll with authority - because we are Coaches. It was all poppycock. Rubber-stamp and they basically just piggy-backed the AP poll rankings, which why they were always so close and so similar except sometimes for the Top 2 teams. Some coaches would flip one way or the other for their friend or their coaching region.
AP is the oldest and yes, back to blue blood, legitimate CFB Poll that has stood the test of time even through BCS nonsense, etc.
It started in 1936 and has always been the benchmark. Some Midwest schools have won the Coaches Poll, West Schools, Southern Schools, all have won AP Polls...like LSU in 1958.
And Coaches used to vote before the bowl games. Ergo 1973.
When #1 Alabama in the AP and Coaches Poll lost to #3 Notre Dame in their Bowl game. AP rightfully voted after the bowls, corrected the error and voted Notre Dame National Champions.
Bama still claims that pre-bowl Coaches Poll charade Championship.

I just want you to acknowledge that you just said that the AP is more legit because the journalists watch the games while also celebrating that it started in 1936.
You just said that.
You just said that.

Michigan is a fantastic school. But let's not act like they don't get every player they want into that university, no matter their ability to get it done academically. Their general studies major is a joke.
