Because of marketing. They need to come up with gimmicks to sell tickets.

It's because no one cares so they need a weird name for notoriety.

Well, the Savannah Bananas arent a minor league team first off.

How do you think minor league teams make money?

Some teams do well with ticket sales and probably can stay afloat that way, but for the majority, its not true.

So what else is there? Merchandise. You can sell it to local fans, but you can reach across the country, and maybe even the globe with great merch, a great name, or a great logo.

Minor League Baseball (MiLB) recently announced that 2017 retail sales of licensed merchandise from the 160 teams that charge admission to their games climbed to $70.8 million. That’s 3.6% better than 2016 – and an all-time annual high since MiLB’s licensing program began in 1992.

"Minor League Baseball team names and logos continue to be among the most popular in all of professional sports and our teams have made promoting their brand a priority for their respective organizations," Brian Earle, Minor League Baseball's Chief Operating Officer, said in a statement. "The teams have done a tremendous job of using their team marks and logos to build an identity that is appealing to fans not just locally, but in some cases, globally as well.

The list of the 25 MiLB teams with the greatest licensed merchandise sales in 2017 were (alphabetically, with Major League affiliate): Albuquerque Isotopes (Rockies), Buffalo Bisons (Blue Jays), Charlotte Knights (White Sox), Columbia Fireflies (Mets), Columbus Clippers (Indians), Durham Bulls (Rays), El Paso Chihuahuas (Padres), Fort Wayne TinCaps (Padres), Frisco RoughRiders (Rangers), Hartford Yard Goats (Rockies), Indianapolis Indians (Pirates), Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins), Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies), Nashville Sounds (Athletics), New Orleans Baby Cakes (Marlins), Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals), Portland SeaDogs (Red Sox), Reading Fightin Phils (Phillies), Rochester Red Wings (Twins), Sacramento River Cats (Giants), Salt Lake Bees (Angels), South Bend Cubs, Tacoma Rainiers (Mariners), Toledo Mud Hens (Tigers) and Trenton Thunder (Yankees).

They usually represent an industry or lore in the area. Or they try to find a gimmicky name to sell tickets and gear.

Many of the nicknames are brilliant and their gear is cool.

Especially their hats.

Hickory (NC) Crawdads???

I lived in that area of NC for almost 20 years and don't recall ever seeing a crawfish (much less a crawdad - whatever that may be).
