Why can’t Big 12 teams play defense?

Watching OU/OSU and it’s shocking how fundamentally poor these teams are on defense. I know they play fast and all but these guys do nothing more than arm tackle.

They mainly recruit Texas and Texas high school football has gotten increasingly soft.

Great question. The athletes are there, they just seem to only care about offense.

I find it interesting that Iowa State seems to field a reasonably effective defense.

If their offense continues to improve, they might be the counter example that causes yearly headaches for the rest of the conference.

I don't think the Big 12 has great athletes at all especially on the defensive side of the ball. All of those schools recruit heavily from one state. There's only a finite number of top athletes to go around.

ISU also grinds clock, which typically works for KSU as well, but they’re all-around bad this year.

It's true the Big 12 has by far the fewest NFL players and an embarrassing amount of defensive NFL players. Like G5 level when it comes to defensive talent.

The talent pool is so diluted when the entire conference recruits from 1 state.

Imagine if the entire SEC got over 50% of their rosters from Florida.

Two big 12 teams are top 25 in total defense....

So clearly their defense is good enough to stop the best offenses in the country

Basically the inverse reason for why LSU has such great defensive players and can never field a real offense.

Just bc you make this up doesn’t mean it’s true

For starters the team tied for first hardly recruits TX

Coming into this weekend that's the fewest of all major conferences.

SEC: 5

ACC, Big Ten, CUSA, PAC 12: 3 each

Big 12, MWC: 2 each

American, Independents, MAC, Sun Belt: 1 each

Some TX poster on here had a great theory. TX HS are so offensive focused that the better prospects move to that side of the ball.

All those conferences with more top 25 defensive teams have 12-14 teams

While the big 12 has 10

The ACC has 14 football teams and 3 in the top 25 in defense makes them look worse than the Big 12.

Probably why they are tied for 1st.

Stop acting like the Big 12 is not devoid of a recruiting foot print outside of Texas.

Last year all the power 5 conferences had at least 250 players in the NFL except the BIG 12, which only had 148.

The SEC had 358 and the American had 104

The big 12 is obviously closer in talent to the top G5 league than the rest of the Power 5.

It as bad as the old Big East.

5/14 = 35.7% (SEC)
3/12= 25.0% (PAC 12)
3/14 = 21.4% (Big Ten, ACC)

All greater than 20% (2/10)
