What Pedro did during his peak is more impressive than what Kershaw is doing now IMO

Why? You guys wouldn't accept it. Baseball just started 20 years ago to a lot of you in this thread.

Steve Carlton's 72 season is the most impressive season ever by a pitcher. Carlton led the majors with 27 wins for a team that won a total of 59 games. That means he was responsible for 46 percent of the Phils’ victories. Aside from the wins, he led the league with a 1.97 ERA and 310 strikeouts.

1) What is/defines actual "best" - considering Nolan pitched at a high level for a long time compared to Pedro...

This. Why do people handicapp Ryan for his longevity? They always point to "this guy had a better 3 years that Ryan ever did."

Doing it for one or two seasons is pretty good. Doing it for 27 is amazing.

And Maddux won 15 games or more for 17 years in a row!

I like Pedro and all but he is not a top ten all time pitcher. He had a few great years and yes he is a HOF'er but to crown him as the best? He's top 20 pitcher though.

Name 10 better.

Eta: And spare me the bullshite about "people thinking baseball started 20 years ago." It's a cop out when comparing recent greatness to greatness 30+ years ago.

Nolan..

Dude played on some bad teams but had a very productive career.

Nolan career (27 years ) : 3.19 ERA with 5714 Ks

Pedro career (18 years): 2.93 ERA with 3154 Ks

Nolan was 8-16 one year with a league leading 2.76 ERA.

In 27 years he had only one year with a ERA over 4.00 and that was his last year when he was 46 years old. He had 8 seasons with an ERA under 3 with his last one coming at the age of 44!

How in the hell is this thread on 9 pages . It should have been done after page 1. Pedro Martinez is one of the greatest, if not the greatest R/H pitchers to ever live and his peak is nearly untouchable. The two really arent in the same conversation, much less the same sentence.

How old are you? There have been 10 to 15 better pitchers than Pedro. Bob Gibson's 1968 season is one of the all time greats. He pitched 100 more innings, threw 13 shut outs, 28 complete games and an ERA of 1.12.

The get off my lawn argument.

Saw the list, not impressed.

Pedro Martinez had a 7 year peak from 97-03 in which he AVERAGED...

2.20 ERA
213 ERA+
0.94 WHIP
11.4 K/9

7 years. That's absolutely insane. Not to mention it occured right through the heart and height of the steroid era. In 2000, arguably Pedro's best season he had a 1.74 ERA, 284 K's, 291 ERA+, .73 WHIP.

Nolan Ryan's 7 year peak from 72-78. (or 7 greatest seasons in succession)

3.01 ERA
115 ERA+
1.30 WHIP
10.1 K/9

They really werent even close to the same pitcher, sorry guys.

By what metric(s)? I'm genuinely interested in seeing that argument

Context plays a huge role in comparing statistics from different eras, leagues, and ballparks. Everyone arguing for Ryan has been completely dismissive of those stats because they believe they are more baseball savvy than those "worthless" advanced metrics.

If only there was a stat to measure precisely that...
