All I'm saying is...if I were a GM...I'd take Ryan...if I knew I'd get that kind of career out of him - for so long.

His longest stint with any one team was 8 years.

And that undersells it a bit when you consider that Ryan had more opportunities for strikeouts since he gave up more baserunners per inning, thus faced more batters per inning.

I believe Ryan pitched in an era where there were less strikeouts, so that needs to be held in context. Obviously, Pedro is better, but I think there may more to look at than their respective K/9 in terms of strikeout ability. I am curious to which pitcher was relatively further apart (in terms of k rates) from his peers when they pitched.

Who was the better pitcher.

Still Pedro.

Look, I loved Nolan Ryan. I loved to watch him pitch and reveled in those late career no-hitters. He was one of a kind.

But Pedro was a beast. A historically dominant ace. Nolan was not even the ace of the playoff teams on which he pitched.

Pedro had 15 seasons of 100+ IP. You talk about him like he's Bo Jackson.

Really bad comparison. Penny didn't win a single MVP, let alone 3.

Pedro Martinez's 2000 season is likely the best pitching year of all time.

Denny McClain 1968 and a couple of Sandy Koufax's seasons have a more than legitimate argument with this.

Can't forget this:

Pedro flamed out in his most important game in his career.

Ryan and others went 9 innings.

Pedro couldn't last 8.

And for the rest of his career couldn't last 7.

Little left Martinez in and the Yankees tied the game with three runs in the eighth, and in the 11th, Boone's long drive off Tim Wakefield landed in the left field stands to beat the Red Sox, 6-5, and decided the seven-game American League Championship Series.

This era of protected superstars with great ERA's...hides the truth.

Denny McClain? I'll give you that Koufax had a season or two that can be in the argument, but Denny McClain???

Nolan had over 20 seasons of over 200+ IP and two seasons with over 300 IP. That is insane.

31-6, 1.96 ERA and 336 IP. Damned impressive.

The comment was about one season.

That is a very good point. Pitchers today seldomly pitched when they are gassed and thus have much better ERAs to show for it. Nolan had 222 complete games.

he was never really in the discussion for best pitcher in the game. Pedro had a string of around three years where he was probably the best - in the middle of an era with pitchers like Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens, and Greg Maddux.

Ryan had a phenomenal amount of athletic ability and is legendary for his no hitters but he doesn't compare in terms of peak ability/performance

I'm glad someone from 1999 finally made it onto the internet with your modem.

Initial remarks - spot-on for the era.

You will find out later that people have different opinions...google "I live a sheltered life" - and see that the internet will show you - this is opposite of what you have grown up with.

You may have fun or may just be irritated that people think different than you.

Probably the later.

But welcome..."you're an imbecile" is usually the first posts of internet noobs and lifelong boobs.

Might of been smart for Nolan to come out of a few games, maybe his walks would of come down some.
