Hard to argue against this

Ruth is debatable considering he never faced middle relief or players of color.

Greatness should be measured by how you perform in relation to your contemporaries

So LSU should offer a lot of kids that play against crap competition because they're great against said competition?

No its not. Every player in his era faced the same competition and he far exceeded the competition.

OP list is good. They all dominated the competition and changed their respective sport.

Football is a little tougher, but I would probably go with Joe Montana. However, since there is no one face of the sport, then it is out of Rushmore.

You obviously didn't live through the Muhammsd Ali era. He was and is the greatest, without exaggeration. Easilynthe most famous man in the world at that time.

For the Big 4, it'd have to be:

Gretzky
Jordan
Ruth
Jerry Rice

The first three were easy as I believe they are the clear cut bests in their respective sport's history and helped elevate their games in the eye's of the public.

The NFL was the hardest one to decide on. Ultimately I went with the guy I felt had the best career of any player. He played in three separate decades and was productive at a high level in all three. Was a crucial part of multiple championships and was an instrumental part of keeping his teams relevant and competitive even when they weren't serious contenders (which may have been only 3 or 4 seasons in his entire career).

If we were including other sports:

Tiger
Pele
Sampras

Not sure about NASCAR. I'm torn between Earnhardt and Petty.

Ali is not considered the greatest boxer despite his naming himself such.
