I got into hockey for a month or two in undergrad. I probably couldn't remember the rules either.

I don't think it translates well to TV. I can't follow the puck.

Oh, and they need to outlaw fighting. That's dumb.

The technique required in baseball does not equal athleticism.

Yes, what they do is crazy. Some guys can throw 100 MPH +, others can make a ball literally take a curved flight path every direction but down to up, others can whack a ball 300+ feet consistently with a wooden stick. The fact that it takes years to hone and become great enough at these skills is incredible enough to showcase their feats.

That doesn't mean that they are athletic individuals though. They don't need to be. It's not an indictment on the sport. There's no reason to be offended.

Yeah, that's tough for me, too.

Not a fan of that either.

The answer is basketball

So if you practiced enough, you could hone your "technique" enough to throw 100 mph or consistently hit 300+ feet?

I would love to try it but I wouldn't know where to start.

Just getting lots of skate practice at a rink and then gradually adding stick control, then passing drills, into full on live action.

Picking up hockey is almost like trying to learn basketball days after learning how to walk, (unless you are already a strong skater)

Down south, unless you live in like a major city, I don't know too many places that have Ice rinks so you could practice or join a league.

I kind of agree with you. Even though it's very hard to do the things baseball players do, I think it's more having a specific, refined set of skills than being incredibly athletic.

I was speaking literally. I do not know where to physically start. I don't think BR has a ice rink anymore.

I figured as much, I was just talking generally to anyone in case they were interested in picking it up. But, as I said in the bottom of my post, trying to play hockey down south is pretty difficult. Which is sad because it is one of the reasons it drove 1 of the 4 southern NHL teams back up to Canada

It looks fun as shite. My niche as a HS receiver was that I was really good at catching defenders not looking and blasting them. Seems there is a lot of that going on in hockey.

No, but NBA players and NFL players could I'm sure.

The sport itself and what it asks of its' players should tell you which currently contains the best athletes. Of those listed, baseball requires the least and the only argument against baseball being last should be soccer as they don't even use 2 of the 4 appendages.

Ok I guess I'm interpreting this differently than a lot of people

I thought the question was which has the least athletic people not which sport requires the most skill and technique

That was the initial question, I believe.

Then I feel like the answer to the initial question is basketball

Per capita I'd say they have more players that would just look awkward or clumsy trying to play other sports

So, in your opinion, to be "athletic" means you can play a variety of sports?

I mean, it makes sense. I'm not sure what the definition is, to be honest.

I might put it in the exact opposite order as you

I don't think they could. Watching someone that never played baseball try to swing a bat or throw a baseball is one of the most cringe worthy things I've ever seen. Baseball is a sport that you can either play or you can't. You have to have natural fluidity. You can teach a big fast uncoordinated kid to play football or basketball. A big fast uncoordinated kid will never be good at baseball. It's just a different type of athleticism.

I think the problem is we don't have a consensus on what "athletic" means.

Hand-eye coordination is important, but ping pong players have that. Heck, playing video games requires hand-eye coordination.

Im not saying that is the only requirement. Come on man.

Coordination is a huge part of being an athlete. And while basketball players are probably the most physically impressive, there are a lot of uncoordinated basketball players. Watch how some of them swing a baseball bat, or throw a ball, or hit a golf ball. Simple stuff we take for granted, they are horrible at.

I agree with this, for sure. Nothing baffles me more than seeing a celebrity athlete who throws like a girl when they do an opening pitch.
