Drew Brees is the heartbreaker.

Similarly, I was talking to some students about basketball, and one of them was a huge Kobe fan. Kid had no idea about all the rape stuff, just thought he was this great hooper who died in a helicopter crash
The Kobe, or any other pro athlete rape story, always have a bunch of other factors so nobody except the two people involved know anything.
Both the rape: “arrogant man thinks he can have any woman he wants” and the false accusation: “there’s plenty of young woman that would just want to have sex with Kobe, why would he force anything?” narratives make perfect sense.
The Punt God and Terrance Shannon Jr. stories show that even at the college level there are women (not all, or remotely close to all, of course) that will chase a dime, and this isn’t anywhere close to prime Kobe.

I never trust anecdotes from celebrity/fan encounters.

Living in Atlanta I can distinctly remember two stories the Atlanta Journal broke on front of sports page: one was Chipper’s out of wedlock baby with the Hooters waitress and the second was Holyfield having a shite ton of kids out of wedlock despite being a devout Christian.

Not sure Chip has a genuine POS resume outside of infidelity. He saved Freddie Freeman’s life FFS!
The Freddie story might be my favorite baseball adjacent story ever.
I don’t know of any issues with Chipper aside from the infidelity from his first marriage. He’s been with his current wife for awhile now and he does a ton of stuff with the Braves. There’s some great audio of he, Glavine, and Smoltz in the press box calling games that’s freaking good baseball stuff.

Yep, that one was a complete shock. Talk about cultivating an image that was 100% false. The only more shocking image to reality shock I remember is Cosby.

But aside from that one thing…

Not an athlete but Les Miles.
yeah, I gotta say that while I had my issues with him as a coach, I thought he was a genuine good guy and family man.
I started hearing stories of the likes that eventually came out, that shattered that image a several years before they became public.

So Les was actually banging coeds?

I thought it came out he had a condo or apartment that was his frick pad.
But, you can also go back to the rumor/urban legend that he banged Gary Moeller's wife, which led to Moeller's public meltdown that got Moeller fired from Michigan (and why Lloyd Carr and some others at U-M hate Les).

Unfortunately, or....fortunately depending on how you look at it - yes he was.

Most of these guys have been elite at sports since early teens, and pampered with everyone treating them like some god or something.
It's probably hard to not be a arrogant prick

Not a POS answer but reminds me In mid 80s as a teenager I was in Hawaii at the same time as the Pro Bowl and stayed at the same resort as all the players. Was interesting how friendly some players were and others weren’t. I’m sure they can get sick of people coming up to them:
Nice Guys - Walter Payton, Marcus Allen, Lawrence Taylor, LB for Giants whose name escapes me and Jackie Slater come to mind.
Not so Nice - Ronnie Lott and Mike Singletary.

Not surprising about Walter Payton being nice to fans as he was considered an all-around gentleman.
In terms of athletes with good reps who did terrible things, Marvin Harrison Sr and Kirby Puckett are very accurate picks.
What Steve Garvey did isn’t nearly as bad, but his personal life became quite a disaster when he retired, and he previously had a great rep as well.
I’m curious what Mickelson did about 15-20 years ago that had him hated by the rest of the tour. The explanations never made sense.
A poster said something about embezzling money from other players, and while I’ve heard nothing about that before, I’m curious if there are more details about this. It makes more sense to me than vague stories about Phil being smug, which would never lead to widespread hatred, especially when you factor in Phil’s gambling addiction.

I feel like the FIGJAM thing became almost urban legend with Phil and everyone who thinks they are in the know all of a sudden decided he was a phony disliked by the tour while Tiger was the opposite (scumbag cheater, but good guy in the locker room).
