Why is Iowa the more popular school?

It’s not, it’s the older, more prestigious, more alumni, and a foundational member of the Big 10. But if you’ve ever been to Iowa City as opposed to Ames more popular would never occur to you. Ames is a stereotypical college town and a good time, Iowa City is as bland as it’s name, horrible.

This coming from a guy from Mo. who absolutely loves Des Moines and the surrounding area. We travel to Des Moines multiple times a year for daughter’s swimming events, we’ve been there during 2 snow meister blizzards and have always had a great time(think elevated, enclosed walkways through the entirety of downtown).

Des Moines is an absolutely hidden gem.

No mega conferences. Conferences should be sized so that a team plays every other team in the conference every year.

I will have to defer to our Iowa posters to explain how ISU was ever more popular than Iowa.

Not even close. It is a Hawkeye State by far. Iowa State fans was very concerned them and K State were about to get put out like Oregon State and Washington State not even two years ago had the Big 12 broke apart.

I’m too lazy to google histories of each school to make a guess, so I’ll ask. Why is Iowa the more popular school?

Four coaches during pivotal times put Iowa way out in front of ISU.

Hayden Fry - rebranded the logo and turned a dumpster fire of a football program around and made them relevant in the sport for the first time in 20 years.

Dan Gable - Dominated the wrestling landscape at Iowa turning them into the powerhouse in the sport. Ironically he wrestled at ISU in college, but Iowa was the college that was able to hire him to coach.

Lute Olson - Got Iowa basketball to their last final four and last regular season big ten championship. However, ISU’s basketball program has passed Iowa’s up at this point.

Vivian Stringer - Put Iowa women’s basketball on the map. The schools first final four and other deep runs in the tourney.

All of this came about when cable TV was taking off and more teams could be on TV, but you still had to be somewhat decent to get on TV. Luckily Iowa had the right coaches in place at the right time to grab a lot of fans that didn’t go to either school.

During that same 80s/90s time period when college sports on TV was surging, Hayden Fry won 15 straight games against ISU from 1983 to 1997, most in blowout fashion. I remember growing up Iowa State not being relevant at all. I thought the football games were just preseason warmups for Iowa before the Big Ten schedule. I didn't even know Cyclone fans existed.
