What should the Jags defender have done on the Gronk hit

Watching the hit, I have zero clue where anything unnecessary or dirty was done. The defender leads with his shoulder, and their helmets collide due to impact/gronks head lowering into the side of the defenders helmet

Would the NFL rather see the defender take out gronks knees, and injure him for another year like this:

Besides telling the defender to simply allow Gronk to catch it and run free, I have no clue what could have been done here

You can knee during the National Anthem but you can’t play defense. Welcome to the new nfl

These big tight ends and receivers aren't going to like when the take out the knee technique is taught because the NFL adds another layer of rules to targeting.

Hit him in the shoulder.
Hit him in the waist.
Hit him with his hands or shoulder first.
Do just about anything besides hit him helmet to helmet.

If he doesn't tuck his hands into his body and form himself into a missile then he's fine. If players would realize that you can deliver the same impact if you "tackle" the guy rather than "hit" the guy and not get penalized.

There's a few comments with ideas that are perfectly clean.

You just can't tuck and duck.

Deliver a blow, sure-- but with your arms, or across the body. Not above the shoulders.

Gronks size means you have to either square him up in the chest while he's not prepared or take his knees out.. hitting his shoulder is laughable as is his waist.. these plays are happening at full speed and it's obvious he was leading with his shoulder trying to square him up..

Yes, because they aren't being sued for knee injuries

Laws of physics say no, however.

It’s always easy to criticize hits when watching them 2x slow motion

You realize Gronk ducked 6+ inches correct?

He was as much or more responsible for the helmet contact as the defender. His original target zone was the chest...

Eta: The defenders shoulder hits Gronk in the chest actually

This. He was leading with his helmet and also put his head down. He keeps his head up and goes facemask first, likely no penalty. Lead with crown of helmet to earhole? You're getting a flag.

He didn't lead with the crown of his helmet

What are y'all watching?

He leads with his shoulder, Gronk lowers his head and hits the defender with the front/crown of his helmet into the side of the defenders helmet

Nothing. He did what he needed to do. Worth 15 yards there because it took out thier best player.

Perhaps instead of launching himself at Gronk, he could have remembered back to his earliest days of pee wee football, and attempted the most basic of tackle techniques: wrap-up.

I realize those kinds of tackles don't make the highlight reels but they get the job done.

Launching himself? Seriously what the frick are y'all watching?

The defenders foot is on the ground as he makes contact

Foot on the ground

And look how far Gronk is leaned over........The defender had him squared for the middle of the body

That’s for tackling, not for jarring the ball loose after the receiver initially catches the ball.
