I wish they would make a rule that if you drop back for pass play, QB cannot take-off running.

Passing is the best part of football. Lately it’s often just a 1-man sport -QB only throws if DB turns to make a tackle leaving WR wide open. I want to see precise routes, WRs beating coverage, Mossing, over shoulder touch passes, amazing catches.

I hate the scramble until someone is open, it’s like backyard grade school ball.

Intelligence , size helps 6’3”” 230 is great . Sometimes once they get taller , they lose athleticism . Have to be willing to spend hours looking at film , and I am not kidding .
Ability to see the field … vision . Leadership , toughness . Working at your craft always to improve .

Josh Allen

Pretty much this.

Mobile/nimble
Tough w/size
Willing to put his head down into a pile
Threat to run
Cannon for an arm

This fits Lamar and others.

Burrow (God love him), can run if necessary, but isn't a running threat like they are.

The rules changes, making the game softer and offense easier plus all the non calls on offense has created the things you don’t like about the modern QB position. If you just made some sensible rules changes we’d get the best of both worlds.

You can add Jayden Daniels to that list also.

The any era prototype QB is John Elway. He had size, speed, cannon, toughness, and cool under pressure. No weaknesses or limitations.

The current prototype has to be Mahomes although it seems like he's lost a step. Josh Allen is the most Elway-like of today's QBs.

Mel Kiper still has Elway as his top ranked quarterback draftee all time and this from a GM:
"He was the blueprint -- Stanford brain, best arm I've ever seen, run, throw, confident, competitive," a current general manager said. "He ruined looking at quarterbacks

These offenses are the issue. Some of these offenses make it all about the QB on every play, and some have figured out how to come at defenses the old-fashioned way. Philly just went old school on the NFL again. Barkley is a human highlight film and can change the game anytime he touches the ball. But doing it from the backfield is getting to be a rarity, and frankly, he should have been the MVP.

Jalen is a smart guy who doesn't push it unless he needs to, and in the Superbowl he had to, and you saw what he does best: go downfield and no one throws it better long than Hurts.

I don’t think this is accurate at all. There just aren’t any real elite surgical passers only. If you had a guy that can hit all the prime Bree’s back shoulder throws as well as push it down the seams you’d be just fine.

This would lead to a great number of sacks and in the other direction holding penalties on the defense because they would have to cover for a lot long, by putting in this rule you're just creating backyard football in the secondary every passing down that doesn't end in a sack

I think said QB can still be successful in today’s NFL. Guys like Marino and Brady, who could read and quickly process defenses, would be able to pick apart secondaries.

I wish some of the older QB's got to play in the style of offenses they have today. Watching Elway run Q Power would have been sweet.

Then there's guys
Josh Cribbs
Senaca Wallace
Akili Smith
Vince Young

Would have been sweeeeeeeeet

Mahomes is an RB playing QB? Jared Goff? Joe Burrow? Stafford? Geno Smith?

You have to be able to do three things (obviously more, but these are important):

*Hit a 15 yard out. This is a bread and butter route. If you don't have the arm for the option route to the outside, you are not going to last long.
*Pick up 5 yards on a scramble. It is a misconception that a QB has to be fast to be mobile. Mobility means movement within the pocket and the ability to pick up small chunks when necessary.
*Comprehend film and make use of it on the field.

Players who can run well are able to cover some of these deficiencies, but the two who have been most successful, Jackson and Hurts, both also rely on perennial top 5 defenses. As a passer, Hurts actually had a terrible year, but won a Superbowl with defense and a strong run game.

The focus on "running" QBs has hurt the game. Coaches and owners are convinced they can take a Milroe and turn him into a Brady with speed. The stats do not lie.
*Passing YPG peaked in 2015 and has been on a steady decline since. The last time yards were as low as they are now was 2008.
*Attempts per game are at a 20 year low.
*In that same time frame, rushing YPG by QBs has gone up by 50% and attempts PG have doubled. This is also evidence that, even though they are running more, QBs have been less effective when they do take off.

Agree. I've always said I'd start with him at QB over anyone else.
