What happened to stolen bases in baseball? Was Rickey Henderson that good?
Rickey Henderson’s 1982 season:

130 SB

2019 NL & AL SB leaders combined in 2019:

83 SB

Is it the current home run era that we’re in and the pitchers all throwing 98 plus MPH the reason why this stat seems so amazing?

Those things combined with general analytics. Player doesn’t do you any good thrown out on a steal attempt. Unless you know for a damn good fact that guy isn’t very likely to get thrown out your probably less likely to take chances.

Mookie steals bases. Dodgers even had a squeeze in the WS with Austin Barnes laying it down and Mookie coming. I was pleasantly surprised with baseball being played many playoff games.

Just seems like the Rickey Henderson, Tim Raines and Kenny Lofton base stealing days are long gone

It's weird but when I was a kid, Ricky Henderson was a god.

You wouldn't think people would care that much about base stealing (and now they don't with Sabremetrics) but Rickey had commercials of just him taking off like a jet from 1st base.

It was like the cool thing more so than hitting a homerun.

When he was young with the A's, he was a freak and him stealing all those bases was a big deal. And this was the American League where they didn't bunt you over. It was homerun ball like today. The lack of an out was more important than the steal.

I remember hearing that Henderson always spoke in the 3rd person when referring to himself and didn't know the names of players on his team after years together. It amuses me and makes me like him that much more.

It was ridiculous for all modern eras.

The three players on the Top 10 list of single-season stolen bases that actually played in the 20th century were Lou Brock, Vince Coleman and Rickey.

So it's Rickey, Lou Brock and Vince Coleman...that's it...for the entire 20th century. And Rickey beat Lou Brock by 12 and Coleman by 20.

SB are cool, but the most awesome play in baseball is stealing home from third base.

Run the stats on that.

What is really weird is there is a Billy Hamilton that is really fast but didn't turn out to be all that good (300+ SBs but not much else) and there was a Billy Hamilton from the 1890's that stole 914, batted .344, and is in the HOF.

The odd thing is they don't look alike at all.

Catchers are better and pitchers are throwing harder. That fraction of second makes a huge difference. Not to mention, the statistical analytics would say the risk is not worth the reward when you are playing for home runs. Moving a guy to second is not as valuable as the risk that he gets thrown out.

I had an old Statis-Pro baseball game. On Rickey's card for the 1985 season it said "If player reaches first on his own card player automatically steals second base*". So, yeah, I think Rickey was pretty good at the stolen base thing.

*Batters could reach first from a result on their card or the pitcher's.

The crazy thing about Rickey is he really could of been waaaaaay better. Outside of stolen bases he was actually a mediocre at best baserunner when it came to things like stretching doubles in to triples and scoring from 2nd on singles etc

Really stealing home, no diuble-steal, no overthrow, no passed ball, no wild pitch... straight steal.

My first game ever was in Oakland.

Rickey led off with a homerun and stole a bag that game. Made my day. I had several Rickey posters on my wall.

Eta... whole game made my day. Everyone noteworthy made plays. Dave Stewart started. Bad arse day I'll never forget.
