Certainly part of that is that practically anyone would attempt to steal back then.

A World Series ended once on a Babe Ruth caught stealing.

1926, don't know exactly how fat he was at that time, he was lean when he was young

Rickey broke Brock's record in the afternoon and Nolan Ryan threw his 7th no-hitter later that evening. Not a bad day in MLB History.

Everyone is trying to smash a home run, so whats the point of going from 1st to 2nd base when the batter is going for the fences and not a base hit?

Not everyone. This is what I don’t understand. Yes many or maybe most. But most guys don’t hit 25 hrs a year so they aren’t always trying for them.

I get not stealing if you are lead off with 2-4 coming up, but if you are in the 5th hole it’s not realistic for 6-9 to hit a home run.

ETA: not to mention, something else to throw out is the huge shifts. If you got a guy on base potentially going to steal, it fricks a shift up. Which in turn gives any batter a better shot of getting on base themselves.

Didn't read this entire thread so maybe some of this was mentioned but while Henderson is the GOAT lead off guy, there were others in that era, Vince Coleman, Tim Raines that could steal 100 bases. Eric Davis stole 80 with 27 HR one year. Eric Yelding was utility infielder for the Astros one year and stole 64.

Along with the strategy shift i think the death of the big, multi-use stadiums and Astroturf are also factors.

Stolen bases are way down since 2013.

Like 500+ less a year.

Player doesn't do you any good striking out, either. Rickey never got thrown out 150 times a year.

what an idiotic analogy

The year he stole 130 bases he was thrown out 42 times. A baserunner getting thrown out is worse than a strike out.
