re: What happened to stolen bases in baseball? Was Rickey Henderson that good?
quote:

While playing for Seattle in 2000, Henderson was said to have commented on first baseman John Olerud's practice of wearing a batting helmet while playing defense, noting that a former teammate in Toronto did the same thing. Olerud was reported to have replied, "That was me." The two men had been together the previous season with the 1999 Mets, as well as with the 1993 World Champion Blue Jays.

Stealing is still a big part of the game in SEC baseball.

Ole Miss and Vandy always run well and run a lot, in particular.

Are they? Honestly curious if more guys are thrown out? I’d love to say hitting is better overall but guys can’t hit to big arse open areas of field when it’s given to them.

Long ball is key and you don’t have a bunch of little skinny guys that can run.

Those things combined with general analytics. Player doesn’t do you any good thrown out on a steal attempt. Unless you know for a damn good fact that guy isn’t very likely to get thrown out your probably less likely to take chances.

I'd be curious what the analytics say about...

1. The increase of scoring a run standing on 2nd base vs. 1st, especially with two outs and

2. The amount of errors forced and base hits garnered from players out of position trying to hold the runner on or in preperation to make a tag. Not to mention better pitch selection for the batter to hit.

Having watched the 80's Runnin' Redbirds on a daily basis I can tell you the stress Vince Coleman, Willie McGee, Ozzie Smith, etc. put on an opposing defense was incredible. Many a pitcher withered or became obsessed with trying to hold them on.

Watching a Vince Coleman get a lead with both feet out of the sliding pit was some of the most exciting baseball there was knowing the fireworks to follow.

Players changed to focus on bulk rather than speed

I was at a game in Oakland 80's or early 90's when Ricky stole 2nd then took the base to the dugout.

Not sure what the milestone was

I want to upvote 3,771 x 755 x 2,297 x 2,174 x 25

he was absurdly consistent but there was always a few players better every year. I can't put him in the same tier as Mays when Mays was better basically every year

I feel like Ricky would steal third base as well. You never see anyone steal third

Possible evolution of the catcher as well. More athletic more accurate throwers
