Ultimate fighting championships
And the knockoff mma brands

Pay per view killed boxing. There ceased to be any connection to the fighter and casual fans. The promoters and fighters got too greedy. As someone mentioned, you could follow fighters working their way up. I remember watching Tommy Morrison slowly move up the rankings on TV. I remember ABC having title fights on network TV. UFC filled the void and was on TV somewhere all the time and you could get to know and recognize the fighters.

The fight I'll never forget was the '82 bout between Boom Boom Mancini and Deuk Koo Kim. That was a brutal fight, and I mean brutal, that ultimately cost Kim his life. The fight should have been stopped in the 10th round. Within months of Kim's death from brain injuries, the referee and Kim's mom committed suicide

Can't really blame Don King for the current state of boxing. And Don made huge fights throughout his career.

Don was a really effective boxing promoter. Though he sometimes got a little carried away, he still helped create more interest in boxing than exists today.
And yes, mixed martial arts has cut into some of the fans and interest that boxing used to enjoy.
It seems like the boxers don't have the personal appeal that the guys from the past did, like Muhammed Ali, George Foreman, Mike Tyson, even Floyd Patterson did back in the day.

What happened to boxing
Pay-per-view is what happened. When they started charging a hundred bucks to watch Tyson knock someone out in 20 seconds people got enough of that very quickly.
I used to watch the fights every Friday night. Nowadays they don’t even televise the Olympic matches anymore.

What happened to boxing.
Same thing happening in college sports today and wrasslin a generation ago
Venues got smaller (Vegas matches today, where the cheap seat is 10K)
Seats went higher and higher, knocked the working class out
Local was replaced by regional, then national.
Popularity was based on your people or your region
Blacks had a fighter
Irish had a fighter
Italians had a fighter
Polish had a fighter
Steel workers had a fighter
Coal miners had a fighter
Meat packers had a fighter (same thing, Green Bay PACKERS)
etc, etc

corruption
It was the most popular sport in the country in the early 20th century when it was completely infiltrated by the mafia gambling rings. It slowly lost influence for cultural and financial reasons as it became more and more regulated.

It got extremely boring.
There hasn’t been an exciting boxer in a very very long time.

Thank you. I was going to say that but all of my friends loved Holyfield and thought I was ridiculous for suggesting that. In that fight he would throw a few punches, grab Tyson then rub his head in Tysons face.

Pay per view.
You used to see good fights on networks like wide world of sports and then Tuesday night fights.
Now it's all pay per view except when espn2 has crappy fight night.

Boxing became pretty corrupt and boring the more extreme action of MMA got a lot of attention.
I never got into MMA but I imagine it’s gone down the same path of corruptness, but what sport hasn’t now that they all depending on a gambling audience for entertainment.

After I saw the voting for lomachinko vs Haney scoring, I decided im not watching boxing anymore. It's def rigged. They needed the young up comer to keep going and the aging champion who took a year off for the war to fade out.
Also MMA stole viewership.

The last blockbuster boxing match I can remember without looking was Tyson vs Lennox Lewis when both were close to retirement around 2002. At that point and long before MMA and UFC probably started taking the kids in communities and teaching them more techniques than just hand to hand combat so there was the rise of that and less interest in boxing in kids.

The fights were awesome..Spinks, Holmes,Tyson,Duran,Holyfield,Hearns,Leonard, Douglas, Foreman, Frazier and Ali.
They all had something in common, they were Americans. Now the sport is dominated by non Americans.

No major heavyweights anymore

Power Slap was the shite about 2 years ago. Now it's just a bunch of low circuit wrestlers that are getting signed and have no clue what they're doing. The promotion has gone to shite because of those in charge.
I was literally in the high limit room with Dana and most of the strikers when they were at Caesars in New Orleans.

Thats the timeframe I grew up on boxing. Barrera was my favorite Mexican fighter back then. Dude was tough as nails. The White dude that he and his brother smoked Crack "Tapia" was entertaining as well.
Hearns vs Suger Ray.
MMA took over the fighting game. There's really not anymore just dominating guys except a few stragglers. No real heavy weights that are entertaining. Usyk is the only real one. You just don't have the top level fighters to challenge the few dominate boxers in there weight classes. A few fights I would like to see now.
The fight I want to see is Tank vs Shaker Steven's
Garcia vs Haney 2
Crawford is a bad dude as well

This will ultimately be the downfall of MMA along with too much ground fighting.
