If you're reading this, you probably already know that in the 90's they couldn't build enough seats fast enough, backstretches became filled with bleachers, then they couldn't build tracks fast enough.

About 2006 or so the economy crashed and it seems Nascar tanked with it and never recovered. And from there, they really seemed to have lost traction and never got it back.

Rules? The popular drivers grew old? How'd it all slip away so quickly? Or is it just my imagination that the backstretches are now empty?

Not your imagination. I used to drive past Atlanta motor speedway on the way to work every day and would see the bleachers getting bulldozed over. Went to Bristol last year and it was a ghost town.
The dirt tracks still pack them in though

Well if you're comparing it to the 90's I'd like to see some attendance and ratings comparisons because the peak happened in the early 00's right prior to the COT that made the cars essentially IROC cars

No more redneck drivers actually fighting, Yankee drivers, Yankee tracks and alienating the Southern fans that made the sport. Frick the France family.

Double wide's got more expensive.

But for a serious answer probably HDTV and home entertainment. Nothing beats going to a NASCAR even in person, but if you're a race fan you can get a pretty sweet view of the whole race from your couch. On a super speedway you might get 25 seconds action when they drive past.

They grew too big too fast and lost their core fanbase along the way.

They stopped going to many of the grassroots tracks in the SouthEast, the same tracks that was producing a good majority of their drivers in favor of the casual fan in the Midwest and Left Coast.

Plus, they brought too many pretty boy drivers up too fast that had shite for talent looking for the next Jeff Gordon.

Plus, for many years in their quest to make things "equal" they put a terrible product on the track. That Car of Tomorrow is one of the biggest boondoggles in sports history. My God those things were awful.

There are now a significant minority in the blue states who find the whole idea stupid.
Wastes fuel.
Occaisional wrecks.
Only cars with deep pockets sponsors can really compete.

It is mainly a white person sport, and I am not sure if you have noticed, but all things white are on the way out

It was a fad for the people outside of the Southeast.

But NASCAR went after the fair-weather newbie and got too big for its britches.

quote:

From the late 1990s, and into the early 2000s, a number of new tracks were built and became part of the NASCAR schedule, in places such as South Florida, Chicagoland, the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex, the Northeast, and the Los Angeles area. This is part of a publicized trend to make NASCAR a more national sport rather than a regional sport. Today the South Region makes up only 50% of the NASCAR schedule, while the Northeast Region has 19.4%, the Midwest Region has 16.7%, And the West Region has 13.9% of the schedule.

A consequence of NASCAR maintaining its current 36-race schedule is that the inclusion of these new tracks in the schedule results in some of the more traditional tracks in the Southeast no longer hosting races.

The fad faded, the "new fans" left and the core fans were taken for granted and abandoned.

NASCAR gambled and lost. Instead of embracing what they were - a regional sporting event - they tried to go National.

But it was just a curious fad for non-Southerners.

This was the height and the beginning of the end for NASCAR.

what caused NASCAR to suck is the same thing that caused boxing to take a back seat. F1 and UFC are both just, more entertaining.
