What can the SEC do to try to reclaim its former glory? Is it declining like Rome?

Basically, the SEC has gotten its collective arse kicked over the course of bowl season and the CFP. If Ole Miss can’t beat Miami, it will be a third year in a row with no SEC team in the national championship game. That’s unacceptable.

The Indiana mauling of Alabama demonstrates how much times have changed over the past 5 years. NIL and the transfer portal have changed the balance of power and given a fighting chance to schools like Indiana and Oregon who are poor in football tradition but are rich in cash (0 championships each).

What must the SEC do to rebound and become dominant once again over the other conferences in college football? Is it gone forever? I suppose all good things must come to an end.

They’re no longer at their unfair advantage of being the only team allowed to pay players. They lack depth and talent and it shows when their only wins are vs each other in the bowls. When one of your top teams gives up 34 to Iowa it’s not good.

I don’t see them recovering, they can only hope to remain at Big 12 levels

It'll take putting guardrails on the transfer portal before you start seeing the SEC consistently winning championships once again. The only way I see that happening without a lawsuit is by restructuring the entire way players are compensated. Collective bargaining would have to become a thing so you can negotiate fair and competitive salaries for all parties involved. You'd have to make them sign contracts that bind them to a school for at least half of their four years of eligibility. From there they'd get one free transfer to another school where they can finish out their playing career without having to sit out a year. If they transfer again they'd have to wait a year before playing.

That would probably signal the end for programs like Indiana but it would definitely stop the wild west that we currently have found ourselves in with regards to the Portal.

I don’t think they’ll ever get back to that level unless they get rid of NIL and the transfer portal. We’re not going to see any historically great, juggernaut teams in this era of NIL and transfers.

Two years the haven’t won it all. Four year title streak before that by three different teams. I’d pump the breaks on the wishful thinking. Since 2006 the SEC has 13 titles. Everyone else six.

Imagine believing the SEC was the only conference paying players

If you had told me Indiana and Alabama had switched jerseys and helmets, I would believe it.

SEC is struggling to adapt to the new era of college ball...they had so much success in the old setup that its hard to give that up. Same for dabo....cant admit that whats worked in the past is now broken.

Portal > recruiting and the current playoff teams prove it

Who gives a shite?
Why do i care if Alabama or Texas or UGA, or UF are good. I hope they all fail every year.

There isn't a damn thing that's helpful to LSU if Alabama beats Indiana, so why the hell would i ever want other SEC teams to win?

A lot of it is scheme and roster construction and bad coaching. There’s a reason 7 head coaches turned over this off season.

Because you want your SEC wins to be quality wins…

We all seem way more concerned about potentially losing players to rivals than about getting the right pieces. Coaches need to learn to let above-average to decent players walk.

What did the Big Ten do after the SEC won 4 in a row from 2019-2022?

Made their conference more diluted by adding in USC, UCLA, Oregon, & Washington to make it 18 total teams?

It’s just cyclical & has to do more with coaching changes.

you’re being ignorant if you don’t think every blue blood or football crazy school was paying players before NIL. The portal is the main reason the SEC has slipped. No longer can Georgia, Bama, LSU, Florida be 2-3 deep of blue chip 4-5 star players especially in the trenches which is what separated the SEC from the other conferences for about two decades.

Also the coaches right now are very mediocre compared to the past. At one point Saban, Spurrier, CUM, Les, Tubs and Fat Phil were all coaching this league at once.

I think this is a very shortsighted, myopic, and dismissive take on the situation.

It’s a bigger issue than that.

Sending Ole Piss to the Big 12 would be a good place to start…

If we’re picking arbitrary dates, we can go back to 2013 and say that teams from outside the SEC have won 6 of the last 12. That’s hardly dominant by the SEC.

This year will probably make 3 years in a row without a SEC team winning it all. I think Ole Miss is the weakest of the 4 teams left.

Gotta pick up on the recent downward trends and do something before it’s too late.

So we’re gonna ignore the SEC’s dominance from 2019-2022?

The sky isn’t falling

Agreed! I never understood why fans would actually pull for their closest rivals.
